I have been using Steve's traps for some time. Good traps. I have noticed one in a while the pan will not trip because the end of the winding spring has worked it way down and the pan will hit the end of the spring. All you have to do is pull the winding spring up so the pan will clear the end of the spring. Make ready for the trap to be set, hold the dog down and lift the pan to make sure the pan does not hit the end of the spring, only take a second. Just another one of those little thing to check.

Generally, do the Albano traps not need any modifying right out of the package?

Rarely do I need to make adjustments on the traps. Ready to go out of the box in my experience. You need to put a tether on them if you dont order them with them installed. Never stake a trap thru the trap loop end. It will prevent good spring rotation to ensure a good strong catch.

I never modified them. I also staked them through the loop when I used them. But that apparently wasnt best practice.

I use no mols now.

I don't really have any complaints with them but about ready throw in towel with mole trapping. Keep going back and forth on if want to keep doing them in my biz. Editing this comment. I sold all my traps I had a bunch of people inquire about them after I said I would sell..which I did sell them all. Thanks.

Every animal and trap has a learning curve to it. Mine has always been the OOS, still learning. By the sounds of it Iowa has lots of moles $$
