Saw 6 or 7 yotes moving across the neighbors field this morning, in an area of 40 to 70 acre lots. They were a half mile from BLM ground, my question is how big would their range be? I want to stay away from the houses due to dogs mine and everyone else's. Would a half mile into blm land still be within their range?

They have long legs - they go far- miles.

They will cover ten miles no problem. Guys around here use trail hounds to chase them. Ten miles in a very short time is no problem. They don't just run in a straight line either. Usually its a big circle which leads me to believe they know where they are the whole time. Those trail hound guys don't kill very many they don't even really try to kill them. They just like the chase. Occasionally the dogs get one and kill it and rarer the hunters will shoot one out in front of the dogs, but mostly they just drive around drinking beer, watching and listening to their dogs.

With the leasing going on by antler worshippers you don't see that much anymore. Those guys have cameras everywhere and are known to shoot dogs and press trespass charges on the houndsmen. It has pretty well killed the free range coyote races.

Anyway that is where I came up with the ten mile range. Sometimes its more.

Kind of approaching the question from the other direction -- the range of domestic dogs will really surprise you. I've run into them 5-10 miles from the nearest house. They can go a looooooonggggggg ways in a night. If your goal is to avoid them, you might think about how far they will travel to find your traps.

A half mile to a coyote is it a few minutes travel.

Laz , I guess that's what I was thinking about. I know all the neighbors and the dogs are inside at night nut out during the day. They all stay pretty close to home normally within 200 yards of the house or barn. I have one hound cross that will go farther but mostly when she sees yotes or dogs to bay at.

I can almost promise you they don't stay within 200 yards of the house. Couple years ago a rancher told me I could trap his place. I asked about dogs and he said they just had a tiny poodle that never strayed from the house. I caught that dog two pivots away from the ranch house.

I don't trust dogs that aren't penned or leashed to stay put. Good story for me was many year ago a farmer had a dog he said never goes out of the yard. Got my permission slip signed, drove a half mile down the road,l and parked out of sight of the house and dog. Did my scouting, was gone maybe an hour or less. Got back in the truck and headed back towards the house. The dog was headed down the first game trail I checked out.

These dogs are all old dogs and hang pretty close, but dogs will be dogs and I don't want or need issues with neighbors. Except for my hound I would be surprised if they traveled too far from home. If I get too far out on blm then the weekend warriors are out shooting and hiking.

I truly believe there are yotes that live in one section, and there are those that cover a lot more. That's based on years of observation with snow cover. That's here in the east. I think a lot depends on the food base and the predator population.

Yep. Get more than one together and they will run miles and miles and even pull dogs that have never left the yard away from the yard.

I caught a dog two years ago, twice in three days, it was from a home 2 miles away. Old dog too. Owner said it ran off in a thunder storm. Owner came the second time I caught it (i had called animal control on the second catch). The lady came and I had her and her dad hold the dog while I removed the 550 from it’s foot

She hugged me and said thank you for catching my dog. Point being
It was old and two miles from home. Use a foot friendly trap of a dog is a possibility

I don't think there is a healthy coyote anywhere west of the Mississippi that confines itself to a square mile> I bet there are no "yard" dogs, that are not neutered, 25 pounds or larger, that stay inside a square mile if given free range
