I never felt like Dusty was a well trained dog. He was doing what he wanted, and it just happened to be what I wanted. He still wares a shock collar when we are hunting/trapping. If you want a good dog, you have to hunt them a lot. He hunted and trapped 9-10 months a year or over half his life. They have to go to learn. They are never to young. You just have to tailor what you do to fit a pup. The year he turned one, he had 117 birds, mostly pheasants shot over him. That's what makes a dog, using them.

Ditto to Mark's above statement. My step-dad had an old farm-dog when he was growing up before WW2. They were combing pheasants out of their hair in Michigan at that time. You could see hundreds a day at times. That old collie-looking mutt was bird dog royalty in their family. It did it all, flush close, retrieve, the whole nine yards. Fast forward 50 years to the English Setter we had......came from good stock, was promising when young, but the bird population was so small that the dog never met it's potential. I doubt it sniffed 25 pheasants in it's entire life. I will admit my training wasn't the greatest, but had we been covered up in roosters he'd likely have been a much better birddog.

That's awesome. Thanks for sharing.
My hound Joy is 6 & is the oldest dog I have ever had. It is a bummer her and I or the kids haven't been in the mountains for going on 3rd season. The 5 of us really miss being in the mountains all the time. One day I'll get better and will be able to be back to "normal"

I like dog threads. There are people who have dogs and treat em like crap mad
There are those that have dogs that treat em like a kick toy.
There are those that like their dog but really don't do anything with them.
Then there's guys like Mark and myself that a Big part of our life is the dog.
You grow together and know/ learn from each other!!

This guy has it pretty bad. He thinks so, anyway. Notice his bed right next to where I sleep. He wants the big bed.

I think it is offensive to the jagdterrier to say that Monti looks like him,
