I use a 3/4" ship auger bit, 17" or 18" long for the finned super stakes. They are a bear to drive and retrieve (even with a retrieval cable) in my ground without a pilot hole. I think 7/8" diameter would be ideal for the finned stakes but all I could find locally was 3/4". They work much better than the masonry bits in my ground, hard clay under a layer of topsoil. Your results may vary.

I just use a piece of rebar to pound out a pilot hole. I prefer to do that because if I hit a rock it’s better to know that I can’t anchor there with a piece of rebar than it is to have a super stake in half way and then have to try and pull it back out to try a different angle or spot.

There a quite few guys do both masonry bit and a rebar pilot hole 18 bit I do not think you can go wrong on either wolf fang or a super stake.. Masonary bit I think is cats meow imo.

I use a 3/4" wood auger bit 18" long when the ground is really hard. Works great

I started doing this with the advice of Taximan. Not the same setup but similar.
1/2” Milwaukee 18 volt cordless hammer drill. Carry extra batteries. Long ship auger bits from Harbor freight when the ground is not frozen. When frozen I drill for both cable stakes and rebar using long Bosch masonry bits. I also drill out a trap bed with a large Bosch masonry bit - multiple holes and then chip out the bed. The Bosch masonry bits seem to be the best and last longest and that is reflected in the price. I use an Estwing fireside firewood maul, a full size maul, a peloski pick, or other tools as best suited for the job.
