This was on another forum here..Member was using boiled eggs for coyote bait..Interesting response from the coyotes, appeared they worked the sets pretty good...

Anyone try this?

I'm going give it a try, was wondering if you should leave the eggs out for a bit before boiling..

Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes......
Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

I didn’t age them at all. Try this experiment. Have someone in one end of your house start eating a hard boiled egg. See how long it is before you can smell it in the other end of the house.

Thanks for posting your idea in chat...if I remember right you had a great response by the coyotes, are you still testing?

I made an egg based bait last year that test holes got dug at for 2 months through some terrible weather. I haven't tested another bait that has done that yet. I boiled 3 dozen eggs last night. And I dont think there is a food based bait that will interest a coyote that wont pull in any possum or skunk that will smell it as so people will point out eggs will catch a lot of possums and skunks.

Tracy's post also gave me the idea that the boiled egg yokes ran through a food processor would make a great thickener for a lure or bait.

Had the same thought. It was unintended benefit of doing the test. I plan to do more testing in the next few weeks.

What about using boiled eggs with rendered fish oil mix?

Test it. Anybody out there that wants to make lures or baits and isn't out there making as many tests as they can are really losing out on learning lots of personal knowledge. You can use others to give you ideas for new things to test but dont depend on them for the answers.

I have been using unhatched eggs for several years. Quail, pheasant, chicken, doesn't matter. Let sour a few days and shove in hole, break the shell shot of urine and they will dig like no tomorrow. All natural after they have smelled all the souped up baits.

Good on you for being willing to test. Personally I think good sun rendered fish oil is always attractive to predators.

I use leftover Easter eggs every year. I freeze them after Easter and use them up the first part of season. Problem is skunk and grinners love em too.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Eggs, the odor, the shells of various colors and sizes represent a valuable seasonal food source for many birds and mammals. They contribute to the survival and nutritional needs of those that are fortunate enough to find a nest or a single dropped egg while out on their rounds. Some most likely make a purposeful effort to find as many nests and eggs as they can when they realize it is that time of year.

Eggs I have found years ago have great attraction for all predators in various forms. Egg yolk powder is a great thickener and adds a quality ingredient to a bait or lure. Egg culture is about as good of an attractant as any we have found in testing.

Most any natural occurring potential food/prey odor will attract attention and get some interest when found. Animals know what smells familiar or looks to be something of interest. Eggs can be a subtle odor in some forms of preparation, while aging a bit and adding something can spice up its attraction and odor emission potential. This is very helpful in colder temps and desired when placed in open air conditions.

I have used egg and egg byproducts in many forms of delivery with good results and continue to do so to this day. Eggs are not a target specific product, they are a universal food opportunity for lots of animals and many will find interest if they get to it first, that is just trapping.
