What size of trap is typically used to live trap skunks?

Tube traps come in 6" and 8" size, but the descriptions for live cage traps suggest that a 9" is 'skunk sized'.

Also, will a skunk that needs a 9" cage trap crawl into a 6" tube trap?

Have to live trap as there are cats in the 'hood. (No luck so far with the skunk(s) still wandering the area....)

Yes, I've taken a lot of large skunks in my 6" tube trap.

Cats in the area shouldn't matter. JMO it's all preference when it comes to traps and how confident you are in your abilities to trap the animal. 36x11x12 is used with no issues.

I use 8"X27" tubes or 9x9 plasti-catches with equal success. Our skunks run on the 10+ lb size fairly regularly.

Skunks vary in size like said.
We have a small skunk in the north and they wont hesitate to enter a 6x6 cage.
I would go with a bigger size if the skunks are xl.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

It was no fun at all when I caught the last one in a DP (I wasn't sprayed--just the stink!). I'd much rather use a body grip, but the cats....

If I knew where the animal was, I think I could catch it, but for now, I just know it's there because it sprays about once a week. If it survives the winter, I may have to start asking around the neighborhood, but rumor has it that it's someone up the block with kids who thinks the baby skunks are cute. The one I caught was not old--size of a large kitten, so part of the family is still out there.

Thanks all for comments on what works for you. I can't imagine that people would willingly want to live with a skunk, but around here, I wouldn't be surprised if ADC operators charged close to $300 for trapping one, which may deter some from having it trapped. (I was quoted around $200 a raccoon when I had that problem, which was what got me into this hobby--was cheaper for me to get my trapping licence and buy traps).

If you are in the adc field and don't have at least 1 cam in your arsenal you are losing money and time. Everyone gets a job or 2 every once and while where the animal just isn't interested in the setup, bait, lure or whatever else ya got set out for it. Cams will often give you a lot of insight on what is or could be happening at your location. They allow you to correct the problem so you don't have to walk around knocking on neighbors doors or leaving you scratching your head on whether or not the animal is even in the area or if the animal is visiting the set but not entering the traps etc. The whole avoid sweet conversation in regards to cats take with a grain of salt, if you've done any bait and lure testing on bobcat and "house cats" to get reactions you will know that there are sweet odors that cats will scale tall trees for.

Thanks for your pics and replies. Always appreciate hearing what you've got to offer.

I'm not in the adc field. Maybe considering it for a part-time hobby when I retire, so learning as much as I can with the limited number of animals available (rats, squirrels, raccoons and now the skunk)

My problem right now is I'm not being persistant and methodical. For a week I had an open tube (one I am converting to a trap) with a variety of food out, but all I ever saw was the same cat. I figured the skunk was gone, so took everything down, but then a few days later, I smelled the spray again and haven't bothered to set up again. Part of my procrastination is because of the nosy retired neighbors who are sometimes a PITA. The skunk has to be denning somewhere, and you'd think that the landowner would have a clue if a skunk lived there for more than a month. I know what attracted the first one, so I'm assuming that if I was near the den I could easily coax another into a trap and not have to deal with said neighbor.

Weather is changing here and depending on which way the skunks travel/disperse/are denning, it's anyone's guess where they may end up. This is the first skunk I've ever seen/smelled in this area so there can't be many of them.

Will take this all in and set up again. I think I'm good for what do do now just need to do it.

Thanks all for being willing to share your expertise.

Get away from using meat based baits for the skunks

I do a lot of skunks in the cities around here and find that fruit as bait with a little bob Wilson’s green beaver lure as my attractant is very effective. Stumbled upon using the bob Wilson’s about 4 years ago when I just could not get some skunks at one job to go in my cages I needed something different and already had the bob Wilson’s for beaver trapping

Every day is a gift from GOD, don't waste it!!

If they have plenty of food, give them something interesting to smell
