An older, and wiser, trap collector once told me something very much along the lines of: " When faced with something ye unsure of? Study it and ask yeself; 'How does it work? Where are the springs? How does it fire?' " I'd gone to him, wetting myself over some fantastic looking " Body Gripper " on the bay. He gently pointed out it was, in fact, an apparatus for suspending poultry. To scald them prior to plucking, or some such Your thing there? Doesn't it look like the hooks are squeezed open. Are held open by the slide down collar. That collar is then released by a tug on an attached cord. The whole would then be hauled up (Yes, most likely out of a well) by the rope attached to the solid ring at the top. Fancy having to use that. Then drink out of that well!
