While digging through some paper I came across an article written by Garold Weiland that referenced John Ehn. The article is worth reading and should be in any John Ehn collector’s library. The article tells of G.W in El Paso Texas (Fort Bliss) cutting his teeth coyote trapping after his return from the Korea War (1954). G.W. purchased John Ehn’s methods, wrote numerous letters to John Ehn and conversed with him on the phone more than a couple of times.. The relationship lasted till around 1973 when Mr Ehn passed away. Garold Weiland wrote some great books on coyote, cat and fox trapping and no doubt John Ehn was a great influence on him. They should have a place in your library also. This is one of the earliest references to a John Ehn student/friend that I have found. John Ehn passed way over 45 years ago. Anyone that took lessons from him or knew him had to be involved before 1973. Think about it (we have a time line here) and remember sometimes you cannot see the forest for the trees. Garold also had a relationship with Wiley Miles (Miles Tigger). Garold Weiland was a great coyote trapper and there is still a lot of wisdom in his writings. Search out the old sages while you still can.

He was a great trapper, he was state hopping to the Southwest before it became a fad: Study his photos, especially the cat and coyote books, One other big thing, Garold paid his dues in the Army. I remember reading the article, have it stored away with a huge collection of the old trapper magazine. Gerald Weiland wrote some fantastic method books. No doubt he is no recognized by a lot of the younger or newbie trappers of today. I wrote him a couple times back in the day and by golly he always took time to answer. I learned a lot from his writing.

Weiland wrote a lot of good articles back in the day, that were nearly a book in technique manuals in themselves.

The great thing about old trapping paper is the ads do not lie and neither do the dates when an article was published. Garold was way ahead of his time and has you said the younger generation could learn alot from his writings.I will try to list a few articles from some magazines he wrote in in the next week. I still have Weiland's Long liner Mink Trapping. Great no nonsense reading and great illustrations. It's foothold trapping only but well done. I still use the post hole shovel for pocket sets and walking aid as the years go by.

I believe Gary Macke from northeast Ne bought Garold's lure business many years ago and still sells them along with a few of his own. He was a fixture for NAFA for many years at the local conventions. His son Dan is now the NAFA agent since Gary is now just "catching coyotes" !!!!
