Has anyone used a Carstens puddler or pintail duck boat for trapping? If so, what is your opinion of them for this purpose?

a lot depends on you and where you will be trapping and how big your line is. you cant haul a lot of weight in small boats. I have gotten around this by putting animals under bridges and driving to it in my pickup.

do it the other way round and put traps under them to be picked up with my boat. (A 12 foot semi v)

I use one of these when there is a boat ramp. I don't have to leave stuff under bridges. No rivets means lots heavier construction. can take the abuse of trapping. that bow shape is nice for pulling into the bank. most of the time you just step right out on the bank.

My use of the pintail, if I go that route will be on sloughs, bog ponds and small streams. I had a pumpkin seed once (home made) that I could sit on the side and set muskrat sets with no worry of tip over...I think the pintail, given how low it rides, would probably be simular while giving me more room then the puddler model.

Pintail is a good skiff. Rotten ice and areas that don’t allow motors. They are stable and can cut through vegetation reasonably well.

Appreciate the feedback. It would open up some areas i would like to trap and it would be more stable then a canoe

Another advantage is they ride low in the water which makes them much better in the wind.

I bought a puddler several years ago and I love that boat! It's perfect for a guy that traps alone. It weighs 70 or 80 pounds and hold 400 pounds and I know I have had much more than 400 pounds in mine. I trap beaver the most with mine and it's great for cruising Beaver ponds or down ditches. In Minnesota boats 10 feet or less don't need to have a license so this puddler fits in that category at 10 feet. And if you duck hunt it's a fantastic boat for that too I have the blind that carstens sells and I fill that full of cattails and anchor myself out in the middle of the pond, toss out a few decoys and the ducks pour down right into your lap. The most beavers I ever had in the boat with me at one time was 7. They weren't monsters but I was way over the 400 pound limit because I'm about 220 pounds. I just can't say enough good things about this boat

Sounds great! How does it handle waves? I heard it takes on water in comparison to the pigtail or mallard

Yes it rides low in the water so waves can be an issue. I'm usually on small water so it's not a big deal for me. You would go down pretty fast in white caps I think. Another thing I have found is that it's tough to get all the water out of it. You can tip it over and get most of it out but for the little bit that stays in there I have a big sponge that I use to get the last of the water out.

Picked up the Mallard today. Nice boat, should work well for trapping. Also added a Sportsman 570 to the stable (new) at an unbelievable price
