So I have been using re bar for years. Last year I went to 1/2" smooth rod. I liked It better then re bar. Now all my traps are set up so I can cross stake with smooth rod or I can use a earth anchor by just the use of a quick link. So now I have been thinking about using angle iron. I'm always looking for some thing better It's In my DNA. I assume that something like 1/2" or 3/4" angle iron will hold better then smooth rod since you have more surface area. I plan on welding a 3/8ths bolt on the end of the angle iron and adding washer or some kind of a swivel on that 3/8ths bolt( before I weld It In place)LoL So has anyone used this type of anchor system and If so have you any suggestions on how to build them or their use on the trap line. For sure they will be harder to remove from the ground.

Thanks.
I have one of those old timey bummer jacks. It Is set up with a chain and a piece of iron with a key way cut In it so you can drop it over the bolt head and then move It so the slot Is around the bolt head. I use It to pull all my hard to get stakes.

Im already just using rod where I truly need it. The wolf fangs seem to do the job well. However there is always that wondering. (Will it hold?)
You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

I'm going to build some today. I have some left over 1/2" smooth rod hat I can weld on the 3/4" angle iron. I will weld on a washer and get some chain and use a drift pin to spread It out so It can be placed on the smooth rod for the swivel. Then I can attach the trap with a quick link.

I build some for my step brother. His length, 1 x1 x 18" long with a 1/2" bolt probably 3" long. Put a washer on then a single stake swivel put the bolt down to the shoulder and weld the threads on. Leave plenty of gap between the head and stake for when you pound it in so it doesn't tighten up on the swivel. Plus you can get ahold of it with a puller

If the angle iron holds better couldn't you get by with a shorter stake?

If the angle iron holds better couldn't you get by with a shorter stake? Absolutely. They are still a pain to pull.I believe in frozen ground, you will use the jack on every one.I personally, don't want to pull any.I am however, interested in how they work for Beav and to see what he comes up with.

I found some old 1/2 x 4" bolts. But I still haven't decided on my swivel system.

Nope as to buying. My buddy owns a major tool and die business what ever I want made It's a done deal. He tells me I'm their biggest non pay customer. LOL I don't like that hex head on the bolt and the edges of the angle iron. I don't like the way my swivel will be rubbing against those surfaces. It's probably not a big deal but It bothers me. Then of course If you use a 3/4" washer on a 1/2 bolt with a hole drilled for the J hook there just seems to be to much slop. I was thinking maybe a chunk of 1" flat stock about 2" long with a 9/16ths hole for the 1/2" bolt and another 3/16ths hole for the quick link. Any thoughts?

Those smooth rods are a lot easier to remove. When I built mine I left about a 11/2" of rod above the washer. Then I could get my vise grips on the stake end. The most important part of removing any stake Is to drive It in a bit so it Breaks loose.
