So I have been using re bar for years. Last year I went to 1/2" smooth rod. I liked It better then re bar. Now all my traps are set up so I can cross stake with smooth rod or I can use a earth anchor by just the use of a quick link.
So now I have been thinking about using angle iron. I'm always looking for some thing better It's In my DNA.
I assume that something like 1/2" or 3/4" angle iron will hold better then smooth rod since you have more surface area. I plan on welding a 3/8ths bolt on the end of the angle iron and adding washer or some kind of a swivel on that 3/8ths bolt( before I weld It In place)LoL
So has anyone used this type of anchor system and If so have you any suggestions on how to build them or their use on the trap line.
For sure they will be harder to remove from the ground.

Yes,I used them many years ago.Mine were 3/4" x12".1/2" is too small for that size bolt. They are a great stake if you don't need to pull them. They will hold like blazes but no easy way to pull them, compared to rod. This was in the '70's and I went to smooth,1/2" rod after that.Great stakes but part of the practicality of a stake is not just how well it holds but how easy it pulls.

Make one up and give it a try.We used to make them with an "S" link between the bolt head and the top of the angle.Weld the "S" link, just so it pivots around the bolt. When you determine your best length, you should only need one at a set.

Thanks.

I have one of those old timey bummer jacks. It Is set up with a chain and a piece of iron with a key way cut In it so you can drop it over the bolt head and then move It so the slot Is around the bolt head. I use It to pull all my hard to get stakes.

I have a few angle iron stakes like Taximan with a S link. I also have some smooth rod ones with a triangle piece welded to the end . They both hold very good but there still the problem of pulling them. With smooth rod stakes I just use a pair of vise grips. The car jack will probably work fine, as long as you don't have to lug it too far.

As taxi said, they were all the rage in the 70's. Hold like the dickens, but a bear to pull. I still have a dozen that I made...never been in the ground.

Im already just using rod where I truly need it. The wolf fangs seem to do the job well. However there is always that wondering. (Will it hold?)

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Beav,it's hard to remember but It seems like the bolt on mine was bigger than 3/8".You will have to leave more space than I had,ie room for the "S" link or other swivel and also room for your puller..This extra, exposed, bolt shank and may weaken it when going into hard ground?Maybe general can tell us what size bolt his have?

Another point,is that the angle stakes are easy to point up.with a nice long, narrow point if you have access to a metal cutting bandsaw or even a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade.

Keep us posted.I would definitely make a couple and try them out before going all out.

I'm going to build some today. I have some left over 1/2" smooth rod hat I can weld on the 3/4" angle iron. I will weld on a washer and get some chain and use a drift pin to spread It out so It can be placed on the smooth rod for the swivel. Then I can attach the trap with a quick link.

Sounds like a pain to me. I'll stick with rebar and/or cable stakes. I haven't lost a trap for many, many years to a pulled stake. If you're getting stakes jacked use a little longer chain.

I build some for my step brother. His length, 1 x1 x 18" long with a 1/2" bolt probably 3" long. Put a washer on then a single stake swivel put the bolt down to the shoulder and weld the threads on. Leave plenty of gap between the head and stake for when you pound it in so it doesn't tighten up on the swivel. Plus you can get ahold of it with a puller

If the angle iron holds better couldn't you get by with a shorter stake?

Absolutely. They are still a pain to pull.I believe in frozen ground, you will use the jack on every one.I personally, don't want to pull any.I am however, interested in how they work for Beav and to see what he comes up with.

I found some old 1/2 x 4" bolts. But I still haven't decided on my swivel system.

I think a flat stake swivel would be perfect, but you would have to buy that.

A 5/8 or3/4 washer with a hole in the edge for a J hook and universal swivel makes a great flat swivel .if your angle is big enough you can blow a hole in one side of it just below the bolt big enogh to drive a round stake through it makes a very strong cross stake i
Came up with this back when i made all my stuff out of scrap and i had a huge supply of 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 angle and not so much rod .

Nope as to buying. My buddy owns a major tool and die business what ever I want made It's a done deal. He tells me I'm their biggest non pay customer. LOL
I don't like that hex head on the bolt and the edges of the angle iron. I don't like the way my swivel will be rubbing against those surfaces. It's probably not a big deal but It bothers me. Then of course If you use a 3/4" washer on a 1/2 bolt with a hole drilled for the J hook there just seems to be to much slop.
I was thinking maybe a chunk of 1" flat stock about 2" long with a 9/16ths hole for the 1/2" bolt and another 3/16ths hole for the quick link.
Any thoughts?

Beav: I'm trying some smooth rod this year when the ground freezes. How did pulling those to rebar compare when the ground was froze?

Those smooth rods are a lot easier to remove. When I built mine I left about a 11/2" of rod above the washer. Then I could get my vise grips on the stake end. The most important part of removing any stake Is to drive It in a bit so it Breaks loose.
