If your not used to welding and put too much heat to the jaws the pressure from the spring can cause jaws to warp. I almost never take themnoff now days unless I'm doing something like a cast jaw mod or similar

Hey wolfdog.... looks good. But here's a thing I do when I weld a rod on the bottom of the base plate. I make sure the rod is long enough to go all the way across the factory base plate. even bend the rod to go part way up the sides ...close to the jaw holes. I still put a kink in the rod for the chain. When you put a 1/4" or 5/16" rod welded to the base plate like the way I do, it sure strengthens the base plate a bunch. Not the infringe on your thread but here is a duke #3 I made into a dogless with the base plate rod. [Linked Image]
