Any one here used rat clips to attach foot holds to 3/8" fiberglass poles?

Your opinion as to how they work?

They work just fine. But I would rather have the rat approach between the jaws then over them. So I welded a short piece of steel to the end of the trap frame. So you might want to try a few like that and see what works better. Or if you want the rat passing over the loose jaw you might want to weld a short piece to the dog end of the frame. They all work when using the Hagz bracket.

I make my own having lots of time on my hands. Yet I’m not convinced a pole set is any better than a float for fall trapping. They’re quicker and not much to carry, but fluctuating water depths make adjusting them an almost daily problem where I trap.

I tried rat clips one night and will never use them again. The empty traps could have been producing on toilets, feed beds, or other fresh sign. I don't need or want to carry bait to catch rats. JMO

You could just use your stake and trap clip and the bait clip and set right next to the toilet or feed bed. Seems that would be the quickest way to set It up. You always set as close to sign no matter what system your using. Iv'e seen where some of those little feed beds wouldn't support a trap but a pole set with a bait clip might just solve that problem. You wouldn't even need any bait just position the trap on the pole right tight against the leading edge of that feed bed you need a stake anyhow. Same with some of those iffy toilets where the water Is to deep to set a trap. Think out of the box.

I'm going to use them in bog ponds and small lakes in northern mn. The rats mainly use bank dens and I will use cage traps and conibear where I can. This just gives me another option. And as Beav says...set near sign

I always set on sign, imo the rat clips are another thing to worry about and they didn't work for me. Empty traps are not making me money. When you have 2 to 300 fiber rods in the boat, the last thing I need is an extra piece of equipment to tangle up and also another step required to place the clip on the fiber rod. Also more money spent for no reason. I use spring clips on the end swivels of the trap chain and 1/16 cable with adjustable loop ends to attach to the rod and then clip my traps to the other end. Fast and no tangled mess in the boat. As for the small feed beds that will hardly support a trap, they usually are a one rat spot and then the trap sits till you pull it. They are like a toilet that is the size of a golf ball or smaller, you will catch 1 or 2 and then have to pull. I just concentrate on the areas with the most sign, and the biggest feed beds. Most of the rats that are making the small toilets and visiting the small feed beds will end up in my other traps anyway. If I miss a couple so be it. I am rolling in and rolling out in 2 or 3 days per area. Take the cream and get out to another place where I have a better catch ratio again... Each to his own way I guess.

Different strokes for different folks. Nothing Is perfect so why not use every tool In the box.Same as those who won't use lure and bait for rat trapping. If It catches you 30 more rats It's worth It. I wrap that florescent green flagging around my stakes I use for my stools. The rats eat that stuff like It's candy. But It's only a spring thing where I trap.

Yep I am one that wont use lure as well. Set where they go and catch them. That's just the way I roll.

Judging by the bubbles under the ice when I go back for mink I am not leaving more than I have to for seed.

So on my line you have more then one rat using a toilet and more then one rat using a feed bed. So If you set ONE trap at those locations you only catch ONE rat. So when I set these locations I set at least 3 traps per location. And since you can only set One trap on most feed beds or ONE trap on a toilet your only going to catch ONE rat. But If you use lure and bait on the other 2 sets your odds of catching more then ONE rat are doubled at those locations. It's just like setting for canines if you have a great locations your going to make multiple sets. Same with setting a culvert you are missing the boat if your only making one set. 5 or 6 would be my choice. When I stop I want to be checking multiple sets. I want to catch as many critters as I can at each locations. Time Is money and you can't afford to be running 200 stops with one trap at each location.
But If your system works for you then that's what you should do.

I combine Sudden Valley clips among my other sets, if I'm walking or canoeing between feed beds or houses, I'm happy to pick up additional fur on the way. Fast to set and you can check them at a glance. [Linked Image]

The only thing I don't like about the clips is they are stake specific. But I guess you could say that about most staking systems. And I don't like those fiber glass poles.
I use a lot of wood lath so I bought some square tubing and made collars for my lath and welded the hagz brackets to the square tubing. For me that works better then the fiber glass poles.

Beav I guess that you didn't read the part about the bubbles under the ice when I go back to set for mink. I stated that there was not enough bubbles to indicate that I am leaving more than I need to for seed. Sure I set alot of traps where the sign warrants it, but I will not waste time on setting a trap on sign that is obviously being made by one rat. I especially will not gang set those areas. Those rats are going to end up getting caught any way in one of my other 2 or 300 sets that I have placed on the marsh and I will be gone and to greener pastures after 2 or 3 days of 2 or 3 checks in a 24 hour period.

I guess I'm not smart enough to tell If only one rat Is using a toilet or a feed bed. LOL
And as to bubble runs here In WI we are lucky to maybe have the right Ice conditions to even see bubbles and If It's right the ice Is to thin to get on. LOL

Well I guess that you were making me wonder how smart you were when you were talking about wasting time setting a feed bed that will hardly hold a trap. That is obviously a 1 or 2 rat spot and your traps could be put to more efficient use else where. As for trapping in Nebraska we can read bubbles under the ice here most years, and they don't lie about how many rats are still in the pond or marsh.

Well I always set those small feed beds with more then one trap. I figure maybe there will be more rats building It bigger. Like I said I set at least 2 traps at every feed bed or toilet I want every rat using those locations. One check then leave em soak for a day while I'm doing 2 day checks on other ground. 3 total checks then I'm gone to greener pastures.

Man I would love to have 2 or 3 day checks here. We are 24 hour unless on a slide wire or killer trap under water.
