So I finally drew my first Wisconsin Bobcat tag. I got the early season which starts on October 19th. What do you guys recommend for lures and types of sets? Thank you in advance!

Have you read through the 30 posts on bobcat sets in the land trapping archives? Lots of information in there.

Not trying to be snarky, just suggesting a great resource on here if you're not familiar with it.

Congrats on the cat tag. Not enough cats where I trap to justify $60+ in applications for a chance at one. Maybe when I retire in another 30 years I'll go after one!

Setting for fox or coyote works for me. crazy
When actually trying to catch them it is hard to beat a walk through cubby. They are pretty easy to catch if they are around. Good luck filling your tag.

Above are all great suggestions. But make sure you use visual attractors because cats are sight oriented hunters. Strips of fur or feathers fluttering in the breeze will suck them in. If your state doesn't allow visible animal parts, Lazarus on here makes some great artificial ones: wyldwingsproductions.com.

Pick up Rick Olson's bobcat method book. You will be glad you did.

Congrats on getting a tag. I don’t want to dampen your enthusiasm but October 19th is very early to be trapping bobcats. They are going to be very hairy. Best bobcats are caught in January and February.

I guess if you live in a state that requires a drawing to a tag, you take what you can get.

Hope you have a successful season.

I SUGGEST YOU "LURE" A GOOD PLOTT HOUND HUNTER WITH A GOOD BOBCAT DOG TO TREE ONE FOR YOU.
I recommend you use a half rack of beer and a tailgate at the Badger/Wolverine game today to attract one, if it is not too late to get there.

Sorry for my joking around. The preceding trapping suggestions by the other trappers is likely are far better advice. Mine would be
With bobcats SOS Set On Sign is the best suggestion. You might look for cat tracks around recent slash piles and I like beaver 1/4's wired solid and not exposed placed well back in a cubby with an MB 650 with the trigger set .

I would suggest pre baiting a cubby now with a camera on it. Fresh meat, beaver, muskrat deer beef or chicken al will work. I make a covered walk through cubby, put bait suspended in center, maybe a mess of feather spread around for eye appeal and a good healthy dose of wind Walker or another skinny lure. Once the cat comes you need to keep fresh air there isn't l you catch it. Set as close to beaver (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) as possible by law. I can't set within 50 foot of water until November 1st. My season is only 10 days so pre baiting is a sure way to locate and pattern one. [Linked Image]

Or just make some good coyote sets. I caught 7 last year of our season and 2 during. 8 were in coyote sets and the one I kept during season was in first picture. A big Tom first day trap was at cubby. The traps at each end of cubby were exposed.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Is it wise to use bobcat urine at most sets? I drew my 1st Wi tag, for the southern zone starting 12/26.

depends on the source of your "bobcat urine" If it came from a bobcat your good. They respond just as well maybe better to a squirt of good fox urine and even coyote.

Ask yourself how many gallons of bobcat pee are sold every year. Then ask yourself how many bobcats it would take to produce that much. (bobcat pees about a gallon a month. at best) ask yourself where all those bobcats are penned up at.

fox farms produce a lot of urine. if properly preserved (doesn't smell like a sewer) it works.

gland lure is the same. 80% of the people who tag a cat every year in KS tag one to four. So where do all the glands come from to make cat gland lure??????

a good red fox gland lure works very well.

If you have a short time period to trap like said above get some baits with cams out to improve your chances cat can be finicky. Cats like things that stand out that will catch their eye. Sometimes they are slow to hit a bait but seem to come back often once they do hit on it. I like to pre-bait so I know what I'm dealing with.
