Have raccoons climbing the 4x4 wood upright posts to pergola and then accessing roof of house. Seems they like being under the solar panels there. Is there a product to keep them from climbing the posts. I’m thinking a inverted cone that some folks use on there bird feeders to keep squirrels from the feeder. Any other ideas welcome too!

Solved many a climbing problem with coon by wrapping the bottom of the posts up about 3-4 ft should to it. Don't leave any horizontal seams that will allow a climbing attachment point for front or rear feet. As long as there are no alternative climbing points you should be good. I spray and wipe the finish area with W-D 40 to aide the effect.

Use the heavier gauge coil flashing and if you have a break that will give you a better fit.

The home belongs to my sons friend , since I have a few cages I’d help him out. I had two coon this morning, which made 6 so far, one at the base stairs leading to the deck where the pergola is and one at the base of the pergola post . I picked up the coon ,when I went back to set again he already had stovepipe wrapped around the posts . I say a 36” section screwed to the upper part of the post . Looks a little ghetto lol as I was hoping there was a esthetic commercial product to recommend. Turns out he is way past that. He’d string razor if it would help! Lol Do you think the stove pipe is good where he has it or should it start at ground level? Thanks again for the help!

Snap and post a photo of the area and you’ll get some good feedback. Sometimes suggestions of what *not* to do are as valuable as what to do.

My experience has been that highly specific behaviors like climbing a post are normally constrained to a particular raccoon (or set of raccoons if they are running together). Remove those specific offending critters, and the likeliness that another raccoon does the same thing is usually fairly low.

I have seen raccoons shinny up a slick as snot down spout to get on a roof. You will need a material which is slicker than snot, or large enough in diameter which the raccoon cannot put enough squeeze on it necessary to overcome the slickness.

The coil flashing will not rust over time the stove pipe material will in time. You can do a good job in a wrap with flashing if you take the time and some average skills. It can be made to look aesthetic.

Thanks to all! Had two more yesterday one ground level at the base of steps leading to deck. The other was on the deck at base of pergola. That makes eight. Only one trap set last night at base of pergola and it was empty this morning! Maybe the invasion is over! Figure a few more days setting at base of steps ,ground level, and on deck ? What do you think a couple three days with no catch and call it done?

Put out game camera just to see. Always fun to see what is around at night.

Prevent the climb access and the trapping is done. You can continue to catch other frequenting coon to that area off and on as well as other nocturnal animals.
