Hey everyone what is you all's opinion of using waxed dirt in the early season? Is there any major disadvantages? I have used it in the winter months with sucsess but normally I just use flake antifreeze until the conditions get harsher. I have heard some guys say that they can smell it when it isn't very cold. The reason I ask is that I have enough of the stuff made up to start off with it if I choose to but I wouldn't want to do that if it could hinder my catch. Any opinons greatly appreciated. Thanks

I start out and end with wax sand, even if i start in mid october and damage work in april. Freezing on the surface can be just enough to cause a miss . Just my 2 cents

Same here. And this year is wetter than last year, so no reason not to.

Ted, if conditions are mild, you can start out with the dirt at the set, and use flake anti freeze, or calcium chloride. You will just have to dig up the sets and re-bed with waxed dirt when conditions get crappy. Just a little more work, is all.

USE IT AL ITS CHEAP INSURANCE! Im not sure they smell it as much as its a major texture difference. I started the season using it in the beginning I was getting a few dig ups but started bedding different and the problem went away.

Wax dirt is great for if it rains.

I've never heard of wax dirt having a problem odor.

Just like others have said, once I switched to waxed sand I start with it and I end with it. A lot of advantages to it.

I will have to say once you get use to waxed sand it's hard to believe i even trapped without it. Lol. Its a bad habit for sure , but it makes for alot more skinning.

Saves a lot of remakes after rain/wet snow. Only time I remake is after a catch or snapped trap, after hard rain i do the relure thing and thats all i worry about, ...ive had sets sit a month thru a lot of crap and make catches, in Dec and Jan. Rain, freeze, thaw, snow, thaw, freeze, catch, remake...confidence, from beginning to end and never did I see any avoidance. That would be contaminated or scorched..

All season for me too, saves a ton of time, lots of value to that alone. The sets stay working no matter the weather without remaking after every rain. It's not how many sets you have out , it's how many sets that are working! I don't even relure or add urine until the trap gets fired or a catch is made. Or an ice storm then I just lift the crust off add a little waxed dirt , reblend if needed and off I go.

Common sense catches alot of fur..
Pay homage to all you harvest..
