I was out scouting some area near my home and found something i am not 100% sure is coyote activity completely or coyote activity as a result of humans dumping. I am thinking the latter. I found in a decently remote section of the field three to four sheep carcasses that are just bone piles and wool right now. Most have bene there a while but do appear to be from different times as some are bleached and dry and some are more recent. I am decently new to the area so I am not sure if they are getting dumped by some local farmer or if the coyotes are bringing them there to feed. This is something i have never encountered myself in coyotes but like i said I am quite new to this region and fairly new to closely monitoring coyote activity and trends.

Most likely a dump site for carcasses.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Thanks guys. I couldn't imagine them getting drug from a nearby farm to here as it would be miles literally minus maybe an escapee which could happen. The spot they are in is just very odd though. Odd i suppose a person would select there to dump but i suppose there is as good a spot as any. Its just an open field remote from about anything and there is a 24" deep trench for a bit.

So can you look at a platt book and see who owns the field, or is it public ground, then look at the closest sheep farmers? If I raised sheep and had a place ten miles away from my herd, then I too would try to get my dead away from the flock so the local coyotes don’t develop a taste for them. When you say trench are you meaning man made? Or more of an erosion ditch.

Erosian ditch. potentially an old irrigation ditch from years past. The land is public and there are a few sheep farms within a few mile radius of the area. That does make sense though getting the dead away from the herd. Logical. Very high coyote activity in the area of course and will likely get a set or two of mine but i do want to watch where my public sets are in relation to human traffic in the area. It is wide open so a coyote in a trap by here could be seen for miles. But i am sure there is a spot i can get the traffic coming in or out.

Keep in mind that you may not be the only local trapper or coyote hunter using that site. Talking with the area ranchers may get you access to other similar dump sites. Coyotes will likely not be far from those sites and will check them frequently. Look closely and you should find some well worn trails leading to/from each site.

Coyotes will drag numerous uneaten prey a fair distance, but they don't normally take them to the exact same spot (dens excluded).
It is referred to as caching. It would be disadvantageous for them to take them all to the same spot, due to thieving competitors.
