I am making a western excursion this year and it’s possible to catch some badgers I have never caught or skinned one. How is best case skin split up the belly and hull out like beaver or split up the belly and out to each paw. Thanks in advance

The fur trade prefers cased, fur out. Be sure to flesh the pelt very well. Especially on the shoulder and neck area. If you intend to sell to the tourist/craft trade, leaving the feet and claws on will increase the value. Skin the paws out like you would for taxidermy. Even though the back claws are very small, be sure to leave the back feet on the pelt. Open is an option. Depends a lot on what you intend to do with the pelts. Again, leave all 4 feet on the pelt for increased value. The one way you do NOT want to put up the pelt is cased fur in. A buyer has to be able to see the fur!! I’ve bought cased fur in badger at NAFA for a couple of bucks that turned out to be very nicely furred and would have brought a lot more money if put up properly . Those badgers were graded as IVs because the grader couldn’t see the fur. My personal preference on badger depends on the quality of the fur. Badgers with good fur - cased fur out. Flatter type badgers - open. Hope you have a fun and successful trapping trip.

So a grader can't see fur In on a cased badger but have no problems grading a fur In coon. I find that hard to believe.
Eric what do you plan on doing with any badgers you catch? If your going to have them tanned just case skin them flash them well and leave them hide side out. Badgers are a real pain to flesh so drying them fur out may get you some slippage.

I have less faith in competence than you do who once were involved in the system that lost my coon.

Sounds like a guy/or woman could make some money buying pelts graded IV that are quality, but put up poorly?
BTW how did you figure out that those Grade IV badgers were nicely furred?

If you make the correct opening cuts you automatically have a window. I NEVER cut a window In a coon. And I will agree that the window or lack of one on a badger may or may not allow one to see all of the fur.

You know what's weird Beav is Wissmiss figured out which ones belong in the dumpster, not NAFA's fur graders.

I use a chain gambrel on their stubby little legs and case them. Ticks are usually terrible on them too.
Where in the west are you going?
