I went yesterday and it was an enjoyable day. All this talk and reality about the fur market and NAFA has attendance down at meets. Our meet two weeks ago was mainly the old regulars. I struck up conversations with several guys there and most were sociable. Enjoyed meeting Jim Tate, Lesel and the nice people from Hilltop. Miz Sullivan gave me a hug. Clint Locklears Eastern Wolfer kept me up late reading it when I got back home. Several good ideas in there and several things I agreed with that I hadn’t heard in print before.
The dealers at meets have to load, unload, load and then unload again at home. Hats of to them. Some had also driven from a South Dakota, Michigan and Iowa. Clint had just driven back from a Wyoming and loaded up and made the meet. I know how I feel after a cross country drive. This takes a lot of effort on their part.
Reflecting back on 44 years of trapping I wonder how long the trappers that actually love trapping will continue attending and doing all the work putting on a meet. A lot of the new “trappers” seem perfectly happy just appearing on YouTube and never join a trapping organization or attend meets to support dealers. I worry that the very concept of fur trapping is changing from what I’ve known all my life.
Thanks to the guys that worked and put it on for us to just show up.
