Got some beaver tails rendering in a glass container. There's definitely a layer of oil, maybe 3/4" thick on top. It looks like it's got a reddish tinted to it, not the tar black look I've seen before. Is this normal ?

All the tail oil I have rendered is very dark in color typically.

That is one advantage of age. A guy can fill a black 5 gallon pail with chunks of tail, and then forget that you did it for a couple of years! I just found a bucket out back and it had better than a gallon of beautiful dark tail oil.

Friar tuck is correct fill your container and forget it. And yes I mean fill the containers Rendered materials shrink, tainted materials swell. Im guilty to I want to start drawing as soon as possible. That reddish tint means its still got blood and need more time to separate.100% pure bto will not freeze it will get a grainy look but still be soft and sticky. Bto that's been rushed will get ice crystals in it

We're still a couple of weeks away from our first frost more than likely. Once we get colder weather, should I bury the container or just let it ride ?

Larger heat lamp bulbs are better , the bulbs farmers use on baby animals being born in winter , late fall !

honestly I know misery isn't the coldest state but mine stay outside the entire winter! If I was concerned with mass production id put it in my hot box. Mr Ken incomplete bto wont freeze solid it has enough oil content to stay in a slush form.

Really ? Mr. Tony it will and can solidify at 0 F and below 0 F !
I found that out several years ago on the 20 buckets I had at the time . When temps got down to -32 below zero , frigg'in freezing !

process by which the beaver tails' oil is rendered dictates how much resistance it will have or not have against the elements , unless you are in Hawaii . You wearing Palm Trees Mr. Tony ?? lol

there are substance that will not freeze even at -40 f , but they are few within the trapping industry .
if you didn't see that the anti-freeze in semi-trucks were gelling up under the freezing temperatures , breaking down on the interstates a few years back , and that anti-freeze is synthetic to withstand -40 to -50 below zero .

rendered beaver tails is not synthetic but will freeze at the right temperature .

Possibly the Government has substance that will resist -9000 F , gotta check ! smile

Ken im not talking about the liquids in the rendering vessel it can and does freeze solid . Im referring to that reddish tint bto ive put my unfinished bto in the freezer at -20 its gets thick like putty but never has it got solid. The purest stuff get the consistency of a thick gravy in the freezer. If misery hits -40 or -50 im moving farther south!

Mr. Tony , your being mis-led by your thinking buddy , I am referring to the thick blackish rendered oil (depending on Process by which it is rendered) , determines it's resistance to the elements and how far below zero it will go before freezing to gel , ice or ice cube , It gets frigg'in Cold -30 , -40 degrees below Zero your boots will freeze to the earth and you will freeze , hypothermia , you'll be an Ice Cube , If you don't get next to the big wood stove in a hurry !

throw a glass of water in them temperatures of -0 to -40 F and watch it instantly turn to ice/sugar crystals right before your beakers .

NO not the liquid remnants buddy , junk water , left over slop water , I call it pee water with a beaver smell . smile

Snapped this pic today. In the pic it looks black but held up to the light it has a translucent reddish black color. Will it continue to work in the cooler temperatures?

Here is what mine looks like after brewing 2 years, including sitting outside in the frozen winter. [Linked Image]
Not sure if it was dumb luck, but this fox was caught the first night, in the first trap that I used it in a dirt hole.

not in my experience, but I don't add any bone or meat or fur, only tail meat chunks
