Not asking how to deal with it that's easy. (Lay steel down.) how often do you all have problems with it and any good tips for keeping them from spotting your muskrats?

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Your going to have to make drowning sets and If you can use colony traps that will also help protect your rats from coon.

Ok I might get some colonies to try out.

When i was young i hadn't learn about drowning sets yet and had issues. As soon as i put my blind toilet sets and others on drowners i didn't seem to have an issue. Granted the issues i ahd were small time as i was just a kid but one rat meant a lot more to me then than it does now.

Id never had much issues with raccoon grabbing rats. Mink, other muskrats, and horned owls have given me fits but not enough to fret about it. Only time I worry about coon is when coon season goes out so running footholds anywhere for rats goes out the window.

Drowning sets are a given for me. But I have seen rats taken from them too. A drowning set for a muskrat can alot shallower then a coons drawing set. Thanks for the feed back.

One thing I've learned here is NOT to use any lure on sets for rats. The minute you do every coon in the area shows up, it draws them in when they aren't otherwise. I know guys in other parts of the country use rat lures to good effect but around here it turns any rat set to a coon set and I don't want that. Hawks and eagles are bad enough.

Agreed. Any issue I've had with half-eaten muskrats were due to minks or birds of prey. Never issues with coon.

Stools and floats that are lured and baited will catch very few coon. In fact my partner and I caught 3500 rats one year In the fore mentioned sets and we only caught 3 coon. So It all depends On the set. The same goes when trapping rat huts out away from shore sure you may get a coon or 2 but that's about It.
