I use Onx for hunting trapping and at work actually. I am an engineer for a local utility company and it really helps me in identifying property lines and home owners. Trapping wise it is golden for all of the free range public land i trap. I know who the neighboring people are and how far i am from them. Out here there are a lot of property lines you will never see with the naked eye. Fencelines don't mean much legally. It is critical for scouting for me. Over half of the state of Wyoming is public authorized hunting land of one sort or another. The app tells me which is which and also what district i am in for pronghorn and deer hunting and what not. IT also distinguishes between public land and Reservation land which is legally important also. The reservation in my area is very large and vast open range right next to BLM and public ground. The map app helps me stay legal when i would otherwise have no clue.
I am going to start adding trap locations as waypoints just to keep track and for any legal implications like a game warden questioning something but i just haven't yet. My phone kinda doesn't like cold weather at all.

I believe you can save a certain size grid for offline use. I use it and it seems spot on.

If you do not have service hten you can save the map for your area onto your phone and use it just fine. I am not 100% on the size of area you can save but it works for me. Cell service is horrible in a lot of places here as well and it works just fine once you figure that part out. My biggest problem is that my phone doesn't function in the weather that i trap in lol. t doesn't like the cold at all.

I used it for a while but switched to the Basemap app. The maps are better for my area. Onx maps had cloud cover where I needed them most. I saved my entire trapline to my phone because there is no cell service at all on my line.

Seems to me the GPS in your phone should work whether you have cell service or not. When I used it in WY it was in a GPS rather than a phone The gps will work but you have to save the map for the area you will be in if there isn't service if you want to see satellite images.

A Garmin gps will work a lot better than a phone in the cold, especially if u put lithium batteries in it. It will also be more precise when u mark your sets. Found out the hard way. When ever i really need the phone there is no signal or connection or battery almost dead. Gps gets busted just take card out and put in another (backup).

I am not for sure but i believe ONX uses Google base maps. I haven't looked at the information but i am making an assumption there on that. So if resolution is poor on google then it would be on onx as well. I might check on that though. I have been known to be wrong on a dialy basis.

answers to my thoughts provided on their website. In Alaska it seems ONX uses Esri base maps which are likely a little better than Google for you.
  Satellite Imagery Data Sources
In the lower 48 states - •Zoomed in lower than 200 ft: Google Earth •Zoomed out higher than 200 ft: NAIP •In Offline mode: NAIP
In Hawaii and outside the US - •In Online mode: Google Earth •In Offline mode: ESRI
In Alaska - All zoom levels, online, offline: ESRI
