I never used a leg hold on them. I always used body traps and snares. I have northwood #3 doublesprings victor #4 double spring. I have also jump traps in 3 and 4's. And mb 650. Would they work on them? I have few places to set just for otters. I run 2 to 3 mb swivels per traps

You need use a drowner so they don't fight long.

Could I make a drowning set with 3/32 cable like on beaver?

YES, that's highly recommended.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I use #3 jumps on 1/8" cable drowners. I've been experimenting with chain drowners too. 3/32" is fine. I use 1/8" because it kinks just a little less. Chain doesn't kink at all. Otter fight a trap very hard so if you're going to use a foot trap it would be a good idea to set them up as a drowning rig, or use lots of swivel if setting on dry land.

I would not use off set jaws on otters and would stick to 1/8" cable or chain for drowners.

I fixed my #3 and 4 jump traps and #4 double long spring with 3 mb crunch proof swivels. Is 3 enough for otters?

3 swivels, which is actually equals 6 swiveling points should be enough if you have to set them on land. As previously stated, most people, myself included, like to send them down a chain or cable if possible but this obviously isn’t always an option.

Here is what the BMP’s recommend for otter.

I think you’ll be good with a drowning set, as others have suggested.

I am trapping federal fish hatchery for trout. The creek that runs right beside it isnt deep. Has trout a ton of them. Big and small a catch and release creek under 15 and over 65 can only fish.. So there is one spot to drowned them. But too many people. I run my traps at 3.30 before work. If I set on land with the big traps. Would it hold them good? I will get there way before day light. I had one trap stoled and threw in 5 ft of water. But the guy was seen doing it. I called the game warden. The guy got 2 tickets one for stealing my trap. Other hunter harassment. Plus game warden had him wade out and get my trap. Only trouble I have had there.

Well this should be interesting.

Depth is essential. I would really scour that deep spot. Drown sets often mean hidden catch.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

I know even though I have been asked to trap it. Someone see a cable going in the water. They r going to mess with it. Pull my trap up and throw it. The otters coons and beaver r bad. But people dont think just how many fish is getting eat there. I have caught otters I had set for beaver. The water is so clear u can see everything in the deeper water.
