i like to make a dirthole and put one at the backing. some pee in the backing. you dont even need the dirthole. or the dropping.

You'll have a better catch ratio if you lick the turds than put them back.

All kidding aside a dropping is both eye and scent attracting. When you add that gland lure or urine it increases curiosity. They will spend a few more seconds sniffing and moving around. A straight dropping can get one to sniff but its quick. Nose drops for a second and animal moves on a lot of the time. With urine or gland lure added coyote is more likely to want to pee and/or make a kickback. All that moving around gives a much better shot at a foot on the pan. good urine is not always for sale where you think it is. Just like not all gland lure is effective either. IMO a good fox gland lure really shines on a coyote line.

You'll have a better catch ratio if you lick the turds than put them back. I haven't noticed a difference but I've found it an enjoyable practice and it ain't expensive like chewing tobacco. One of life's little pleasures.

If I see coyote scat. I make a set or two or three. I use it on 75% of my sets. I usually give it a shot of urine. I predominately make dirt holes and use it as backing like danny suggested. Last year I forced myself to put in more flat sets and had great success. Use every one you find. Good luck.

You'll have a better catch ratio if you lick the turds than put them back. Is it weird to do that if I don't even trap coyotes?

When I was in high school my friend and I were checking the trapline with his younger sister. She was 8 years younger than us. I was notorious for having the biggest bite off from a levi Garrett plug in my mouth at all times then. To mess with his sister i took my chaw out and set it down on a log. When she seen it and asked what it was i said it was poop but i didn't know what kind. I picked it up and put it into my mouth chewed it abit and said yup its coon for sure. A year or two later i played this trick again. when formed properly a good chew looks like about any pile of poo. Good times. I believe the sister still thinks i ate coon crap that day. Just an fyi.

I used to pick up coyote turds when checking traps or scouting. Save them for sets, free calling cards. Use them at farms where you did not find them dont need to freshen them.up just put them at the backing at your sets. Dog turds work also for coyotes, FYI. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Dog turds work also for coyotes, FYI. Jim[/quote] I use my dogs turds on a lot of sets, both my female lab and my male mcnab cattle dogs seem to work the best. I have outstanding luck with it, seems to keep there attention longer than just a normal coyote turd. Ive also let my male do pee on a remake before i re-set trap and connected with a big male that night. To each there own but i dont have to collect yote turds when i have four turd factories at the house.

There are always variables when the question is asked, "will this or that work?"
Anything works on coyotes every now and again but keeping solid notes from a bunch of coyote sets, catching a bunch of coyotes, or missing coyotes, and putting certain attractants in variable location to reduce result bias... will give you a good answer. Areas can be different and notes year to year will help you. I'd guess fewer than 5% keep records. Most don't keep them or keep them going for long, but you can't talk me outta keeping records cause it's a big reason I'm always following another trapper (or more) on predator jobs. They just set traps. I have a system to get the job done.
Ever notice you could ask any service pro, say a plumber, about a general plumbing question. All the plumbers have an answer. All of 'em know how to cut pipe. All of 'em know how to prep and lay all the piping out. All know how to find the leak. But some plumbers, the cream de 'la cream, smile when the general answers are provided and say, "ya that'll work" and then go about their work in a way the others don't do.

I've kept a journal of every set, locations, attracters and results over the last 5 years. Several weeks ago I somehow lost it on the trapline and I'm pretty sure it is totally destroyed after weeks of rain and snow. I found a trapping app for my iphone that I am now using and saving everything to the cloud.
