Some like to hang a feather or a pelt for bobcat, maybe even a carcass. What if I hang a beaver tail in the back of a cubby, has anyone tried that?

Am I fine hanging baits in a cubby/cage for bobcats, or should I set it on something so it looks more natural?

The tail may be a good visual but bobcat either don't eat them or just prefer not to. I can put a full beaver carcass in a cubby and only bone and tail remain when they quit eating on it.

The beaver tail is good but not in a cubby. The cubby is a low percentage set and takes too long to make

A cubby may be a low percentage set in Montana but that doesn't mean that is true everywhere.

If you can legally the whole carcass works best. But safeguard for raptors! A fresh beaver carcass makes a nice draw station

I took a cat last winter in a cubby baited with a beaver carcass. Caught him the second night he hit the bait.

If you hang a beaver tail in a walkthrough snared baitpen leave a big chunk of the fat about the size of your fist attached to the but end of the tail, then punch a hole thru the tail tip and hang with string.Fence both sides of the baitpen out about 10 feet and put a couple snares in the fenceon each side-often you can catch 2 or 3 cats on a 5 day check.
Deadly set.

Many use cubbies around here, but it takes so long to get a bobcat tag in Wi that I don't think we have a lot of expert cat trappers around. T-man's been helpful.
Last year a guy I know kept getting refusals @ his cubbies. They'd come to it, but not enter. I don't know what you guys's thought is, but I'm thinking of using some cubbies but putting a foothold outside it so I can get the cat even if it doesn't commit.
I have 2 beavers in the freezer. I was planning on using chunks of beaver. Maybe I'll get some beaver sets out & try to catch more so I can use bigger chunks of bait...&/or try some muskrats.

I don't wait till season to try stuff with cats. We have a 10 day season so I have to know what is going on. I make big walkthrough cubbies, probably more like a baitpen that Nick is referring to. I will build it ahead of season and bait it. I put a camera out and study the cat. The snow this year is helping to. I have one cubby that I used for 2 years but this year it was under water because beaver flooded it out. If you find a bobcat you can almost bet there will be one the next year in the same spot. I don't know how many bobcat you have but I am seeing more sign every year and catching more in coyote sets too. My best advise would be find an active beaver dam and set on the ends of that. Bobcats love beaver dams here.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I get a ton of cat activity at beaver dams and I have sets near one now. When I mentioned a cubby, that wasn't entirely accurate. I had the carcass wired to the base of a tree and draped with spruce boughs to meet the regs. We can't have bait exposed that can be seen from above...birds of prey. The cat had no problem finding the carcass and worked it two nights in a row before I caught him. He pulled the carcass to the back side of the tree the first night. I wired it tighter and got him the second time he tried.

Beaver dams are great cat attractors but here In WI but we can't set any traps on them and I believe that goes for CRs too.

We can't set the dam or house but there's always a lot of activity in the vicinity.

We have a stream on our property. I may see if a downed tree across the stream gets cat activity. They may use it kind of like a beaver dam. If the creek freezes over maybe I'll have to rethink things a little bit.

15' I think is how far we have to be away.

Interesting on the BTO for cats. I have some BTO. May have to consider that.

Got him in near vicinity to a beaver dam. Saw cat tracks two days in a row and had him within a week. He was waiting for me this morning. I can't wait for deer season to end so I can get after the cats, there are tracks everywhere.

AJE,
The nice thing about bobcat trapping is that you can experiment with many different approaches. Beaver tails may turn one cat on and not another. Vary it up. But don't assume that cats aren't interested in what we have because they can be... throw it all at 'em if you want to connect more.
I use lure, bait, urine, droppings and sometimes visual at nearly all key bobcat sets. I don't like to miss bobcats whether on a fur line where the prices are super duper or on a predator job where we need them gone.

Good luck and good trapping!
Mark

You use all of that at the same time on a set, Mark? I might be mistaken it what you meant but I have sets out like that right now. I don't know if I can overstimulate a cat or not. I'll let you know.

Posco,

Good luck on the kitties. My go to set is some type of walk through, smell the turds with urine, look down a bigger augured hole (If I can make it), and what's that good lure and bait smell coming up outta there kinda set.

Usually.

Mark
