We got 3" of snow the other day, so today I clean off the snow and crust from my dirt hole sets and added fresh dirt for eye appeal. Should I do the same with my flat sets or leave them ? If the temps keep going like they are the crust on top will get thicker and might not fire the trap. -Thanks

Same for both if conditions warrant it.
Snow most get worrisome over it. Here where get some snow I do not touch a set until the snow starts getting heavy or wet. [Linked Image]

If its going to stay cold i leave some covered and brush some off to make them eye appealing and look new, weather is the biggest factor in my opinion. Dont really want a swamped set where im at cause it normally freezes up decent at night, or in general i guess. Caught them in both cases, depends on the yote also. I brush out my tracks to a set if i do get snow off one also.

You don't have to take off all the snow. Snow is a terrific insulator, among the other good things it does for a trapper.

Maybe use a leaf blower to remove some snow (if it's not too heavy).

Maybe you could try a squirt of propylene glycol.

If it’s only a few inches and it’s going to stay cold I leave them alone. I always have a higher catch after a snow or dusting. Really bugs me because I wonder about my blending of the sets with dirt. Does the snow hide my mistakes or are they just hungry or relaxed after a snow? Good luck

Unless it is wet and heavy or you get a serious thaw then it freezes again I leave it. With the cold we have had right now here the snow is maybe 4 inches or so and is light enjoy a coyote will step to trap and like was said. My trap is not going to freeze down until I remove the snow.

Wish I had more time to trap....

If you’re confident the set is still in working order, and the snow is of an amount and type that will not adversely impede trap function, and the situation is going to remain constant for a little while, LEAVE THE SNOW ALONE!

Now if I know the weather in the next 24-48 hours is going to change those conditions (melt the snow to form water, crust the snow to impede the trap, etc), than I’ll clean it off.

2” of wet heavy snow is not the same as 6” of light dry snow.
