This is the correct answer. I believe they need to keep them forever and if the close they need to be sent in to ATF.
I have nothing clever to put here.

And what information is on the 4473? The 4473 is the yellow sheet (now white) that YOU fill out when you buy it. All your info as well as make, model, caliber and serial number of what you bought. No prices are included if that is what you are asking.
I have nothing clever to put here.

So they do know who owns the guns. They know in theory who bought it from the dealer.....if they have the time to sort through 1,000’s of hard copy forms or the FFL’s bound book.
I have nothing clever to put here.

An FFL license is required to keep the 4473 background check form for 20 years. If he goes out of business in less than 20 years he is required to surrender all of the 4473 forms and his accusation/disposition record book to the BATF. I have had (and still have) an FFL and retail gun business for in excess of 14 years. This past September I spent an afternoon with a couple of BATF agents reviewing my records and being informed of new and changed regulations. The gentlemen we very informative and I enjoyed the afternoon. By the way my records got high marks from the agents!

I always wonder how long the forms was kept.when I was going to ask my gunsmith I always forget to ask him. I know that after a FFL gose out that the forms gose to BTAF .

And what information is on the 4473? I can attest to the fact that more than 30 years ago that yellow form enabled LE to trace that gun back to the buyer in the matter of a few hours or less !

Well , what they say about record retention and what is really being kept are two different things.
Now that the 4473 is electronic I seriously doubt the infor ever goes away. Submitting the 4473 info to the BATF over the computer is an option for the dealer. The dealer can still call the BATF and relay the information verbally. I still call them in over the phone. The paper form with all your information plus the make, model and serial number stays on site in my file storage.
