Been looking at the #3 Wolf Creek Trap.

Anyone here use them? Pro's? Con's?

Mike

I use Wolf Creek traps. I run the Diablo Dp's, 1.5 coilspring and the #2 dogless. Pros first of all are the price. That is pretty clear. They are built exactly like the old Northwoods traps are dimensions and all. That is why i like htem. But the traps themselves are bare bones. No base plates corner chains. They work great. Most will need tuned but in general most traps do need tuned. Parts for Northwoods fit them if you want to four coil them or get baseplate kits or lamination kits. The dogless design is basically a Montgomery dogless on a northwoods trap. They took me a minute to figure out how to tune them when i got them and then work with them in the field but they function as i have them set. I am running way to little pan tension but that is on me and not the trap. the 1.5's i have that are dog on traps are spot on for mee hold tight and work as described. I ran northwoods for ten years so getting new ones was easy for me.

Pros. 1. Cheap
2.Glenn Witchey "Ohio" screenname here owns the company and is a good dude that traps himself everyday.
3. simple
4. Parts or mods are easy to find

Cons
1. Bare bones
2. Needs tuned to get your system setup

If you want message "Ohio" here and get him on the phone he answered all my questions first hand. Keep in mind it is trapping season and from his facebook posts he is pretty busy.

I have some of the 2s and 3s. I have not used the 3s much. I caught a coon in a 3 and decided in areas were multiple targets are possible that I would stick to the 2s. We have a lot of coons. I have some areas that I will be using them later this winter that I don't anticipate coons....maybe. The 2s hold plenty.

The critters that I have caught in my 2s have been deep in the trap. I'm running 3.5#ish and once I have them there, they seem to stay at that poundage.

Cons: The #3 has short jaw "ears" and I had to bubble weld....I'm not a good welder but I managed to get it done. I swapped the j-hooks to the heavy #6 ones or whatever they are called.

Once I figured out the "reverse setting", I got along with them better. I set them with the "dog" side toward me, depress levers, reach under loose jaw with finger and pull up the pan.

I would 2nd that Glenn (Ohio) is a good dude.

Good traps overall, having the chain mounted on the side doesnt make a bit of difference. However, if you dont bubble tip the jaw tips they will pop out VERY easily, either from a coyote or by hand. It does not take much to pull them out. Once that is fixed they are an excellent trap.
