When NAFA was in business, the grader I spoke with suggested your buyer might be taking advantage of you if he gave you less for female coon. I’ve always assumed ( and I may be wrong) that coon bellies weren’t used for much so their value to the pelt isn’t much regardless of the gender

GFW claims the sows she's heavy and fur is not as set as bores. Watch their coon video on YouTube. Is it an excuse to by the cheaper? Don't know, I don't do coon just a few I get in canine traps.

Wish I had more time to trap....

barren female and males should be no different.its like they think male coon don't have teets.and actually all the teets should do is be an indicator to look at something else.

Prime Is In the eye of the grader. From what I'm told Is that female coon are always late to completely prime. So If your catching coon In late Nov those female coon aren't as prime as an adult male will be. And female coon caught out of barns are even worse as to being prime.

Seems like the sows out here are better colored and in Late November I see little difference especially if they are barren or tits are not bare

When you get your eye calibrated you can tell females from males just laying belly down on the tailgate, without flipping them over.

The sows rarely have as good a quality of fur.

Sold a XL coon today and it was put up. The buyer said I put alot of work into a $5.00 hide. Yep $5.00 for an XL. Now the 4X he will pay $16.00 and 3X $12.00 and the 2X $9.00 and the XL $5.00. Mine was fairly prime just a little dark so I would say prime somewhat. That one was my one catch for ten days, no yote's but some deer sprung traps and pan covers removed on some. So my pan screen covers must have had some taint. I did install them bared handed I also put the wax paper on bare handed and no sprung traps. My wife says all that expense and work you gotta quit trapping. I am looking for the good old days when prices were $25.00 to $35.00 for a 4X coon. Coyote in the carcuss he paid $25.00 and it looked rubbed. Last year I sold my first coyote in the carcuss and got $7.00 he said it was a pup. That's trapping

Coons don't have good bellies no mater what time of year. Or what there gender Is. You need to be looking at the coons flanks not the belly.

I remember almost 40 years ago when I took my first finished Coon to a fur buyer in Gretna Nebraska. The buyer took his knife and cut a big "U" in the belly side. He saw the look of shock and disbelief on me and my younger brothers face. He quickly said, "Ya gotta show the buyer what your selling boys, anybody who docs ya fer the belly is cheatn ya!" LMAO

I think that buyer was moving to Wyoming or Montana, we only sold to him a few times before he moved.

I remember as kids momma taking us to the store every Saturday to sell our critters. I’m taking 13-15 year olds and all we did was skin and sell. We were getting $12-15 for coons, $20-25 for fox, and $35-40 for cats. Coyotes weren’t common back then. We had caught one but let it go because we didn’t know any better. Now all those were what y’all call green or greased I guess.
