I want to start trapping mink and need a few good tips to help get me going. I'm using drowner slides mainly but also want to use Conibears.

See you have not got a ton of responses.
*The first thing I would recommend is to understand something about the mink. Back in the day the old trapping writers made the mink out to be a super elusive critter. Nothing could be further from the truth.
*That said, there is a lot to becoming a mink trapper, one that can trap mink in any condition, in any area. Just a lot to know and learn.
*I highly recommend Gerald Schmitt's last mink book, the one that really covers long lining. It will take you from knowing not much about mink to catching mink.
Geralds book will not dazzle you a zillion sets but if you follow what he teaches, you can catch a lot of them if you are willing to work and you have the numbers available.
*For a book that will really cover everything from the proverbial soup to nuts, look at Don Powell's mink book and DVD. It is an extremely through. It is a great book, The DVD is great also.
*I am a huge Johnny Thorpe fan, If you can get a hold of his first mink video, get it. The second on is excellent too.
*Ardelll Grawe and Red O'Hearn have very good books.

*Depending on how serious you are, personal instruction will shoot you light years ahead in the learning curve. I have a friend in Ohio that is about as good as they come on mink and is instruction fee is affordable. He does not advertise.
Hope this helps
Mac

the greatest teacher i have ever had is snow.i've read every book twice and saw every video 3 times but still nothing compared to following a set of tracks in the snow.they are a creature of great habit and most of the time,if he did it once,he'll do it again and so will all his kin that come along the same path.

This very sound advice. For all you wrote. I learn that way also ,beside from the fur buyer that I use to sell to many years ago. As long the area dose not change they will do like you stated. Otter is the same way I learn from them the same way ,beside from the same person. The otter is just a over grown mink.

You can essentially use conibears anywhere you can use a foothold trap, preferably with a pan trigger set close to the bait. Many will tell you that box sets don't work worth a dam but in certain frozen conditions they work reasonably well. When using baited box cubbies the key to reasonable success IMO is to consider all the following when setting them:

---Whether using footholds or body grip traps, the main things to remember about the boxes are to set on LOCATION where mink travel, have the back of the box wire mess screened for air movement and box see through effect, camouflage the box well with surrounding vegetation/snow or whatever and hide the bait with dry grass so the mink will enter the box searching for it, and keep the bait fresh.

---The best location for boxes is at beaver pond outlets, overhanging banks, small feeder stream entrances with larger water courses, at active and abandoned beaver lodges and alongside open water areas of frozen streams.

---Use a box with a wire mesh back for air/scent flow and see through effect and an entrance cover with a 2 ½ inch hole. Mink explore holes all the time and thus it's my opinion, and experience, that the hole is an attraction to them. Another advantage of the restrictive entrance hole is that when trapping a farm area, it restricts barn cats from entering.

---Use a pan trigger set up. Although mink are accustomed to tunnelling through vegetation, it is my understanding and experience that, many will often balk at the cold, hard and stiff wires in their face at the box entrance and shy away from entering. Whereas with a pan trigger trap set CLOSE to a concealed bait at back of the box, and nothing in their face, they will proceed to enter and investigate further thus stepping on the pan and getting caught.

---Place your lure on a small bush at back of the box low to the ground and close to the box.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Thanks everybody for the great advice, I will definitely use it where I can. Unfortunately I haven't been able to set traps do to weather and harvest season, so I can't wait to get some set and see what happens and learn from my mistakes.
