My o6 is chipped with fast fuel system bigger turbo and a head stud kit
Did a 5000 dollar trans
Just dumped 5000 into redoing the suspension
They last longer with stock tires and no lift for sure but chip has never been a problem

My 06 was chipped when we bought it and nuked the engine. Replaced it and blew the freeze plugs due to water pressure put back to factory specs and its running great no noticable big loss of performance. I put 10 g into it but added some new parts like high performance clutch and new torbo injector s and stuff that is easier to fix on an engine stand.

It nuked the engine because it did not have a head stud kit?

I think it spun a connecting rod bearing and burnt the journal out was about to put the rod through the side when i got it shut down. My daughter had bought it after college and the shop asked why she ordered the angry troll option.

they'll last forever if you don't boost them up, every added horsepower, adds to bearing thrust and compression, which takes away engine life, many 5.9's have been used in 1000 hp pulling trucks, but they get a rebuild every week.

I’ve got a 99 Cummins. Best truck I’ve ever owned. Treat them right and they’ll last forever. I would lean towards the third gen more (03-early 07) due to the second gens having more problems such as heater core, lift pump, fuel pump etc. The third gens are solid trucks. I would highly recommend buying a manual transmission or you will be spending a good chunk of money on rebuilding/replacing the automatic at some point. Mine has the bigger turbo, tune, injectors and all that stuff. You don’t need it, I wish I’d have left it alone

I have 2nd generation 12V sitting in the parking lot with the plow on it, and what's left of the body, 400K and no problem, besides normal wear and tear, other than fuel shutoff solenoids and the killer dowel pin which I dodged the bullet on. No computer, very little electronics, real simple. Can't say that about the third gen! crazy If everything else was equal I'd take the old 12V over the 24V with the common rail. The 06 does ride better even being a 3500 instead of 2500 and the 6 speed is a plus over the 5.
