Long time reader but 1st post! Trying to come up with ways to reduce my time at making sets and thinking about using a cordless demo hammer to drive disposable stakes. Building a driver to fit the tool and stay in one piece could be tough. Anybody try to use a demo hammer set at just hammer for driving stakes? About $200 plus batteries...

Interesting concept but maybe just consider a bigger hammer? A good sledge will out drive a smaller hammer.
Had a friend that bought an 8 lb. Sledge full length handle and he cut the handle down a little shorter and we used that to beat rebar stakes in solid frozen january nebraska soil, worked very well and I dont think he had but 15 or 20 bucks in it. He could beat in stakes way faster than i could with my 3 lb "trappers hammer."
I'm sure upper michigan has same rock solid frozen soil we do here in january. My dirthole trowel is useless in january. I carry a heavy rail pick for making trap beds. The hammer drill would be an interesting concept in those conditions I bet.
For disposables i just beat a stake in for a pilot hole pull the stake and follow that hole right back in with a disposable and driver. I do this with pogos and berks in frozen soil late season here.
Never thought if using my hammer drill and a chisel bit or masonry bit to make holes, I may have to try that.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

One more piece of equipment to carry and batteries to go dead. That said I do use a battery operated hammer drill to get my super stakes into the frozen ground. But only if it is frozen deep. I take a long wood auger bit and drill a smaller pilot hole. Sure makes pounding in my super stake easy. But I set traps usually right off the off road 2 track drive.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping someone used one for this but maybe I will try it next year.

I’m hoping after this discussion somebody recommends a video to clarify what you’re talking about!

Sounds heavy.

I built a driver for rebar that we used to stake concrete parking bumpers to the ground. It was just an old SDS drill bit cut off with a piece of pipe welded around the drill bit to make a sleeve. It lasted about 3 rods before the rotary hammer cracked the pipe around my weld. So, I made another one and drilled some holes in the pipe first so I could weld it in more locations. That one probably drove 5 pieces of rebar before the steel cracked all over. I ended up using a piece of rubber hose as a sleeve with hose clamps. We went through a lot of hose that day but it was better than driving them by hand.

I predrill for super stakes with the DeWalt 20 volt, 3 speed, XR hammer drill and a 3/4” auger big. One 5 amp hour battery lasts all day. Cuts off a lot of hammer time and my wrists and elbows don’t hurt at the end of the day anymore.
