I have been hired to caretake a remote lodge on the island. I've never been there before. The lodge owner has all the answers but communication be is tough because of the remoteness. So I hope maybe someone has local info. On what the fishing opportunities might be close to shore during the winter months.

I can't really speak to the fishing; probably dollies along the shore, but be sure to take some fox and otter traps.

A very good friend of mine was hired right out'a high school in Nevada by the "last of the great brown bear men" on Kodiak to guide and take care of the ole cannery communications that was one of their base camps. Never was there before, was dropped off and I forget which one meant him there and he was told to take care of stuff and they would be back when ever........what a experience he had for a long long time. So you will have a great time. Do not eat seal liver :-( no matter how hungry U R. Have fun! Be safe.

Seal liver is awsome. Not sure why your warning. Can't shoot one but if offered some by a native, I would highly recommend it.

Perhaps your thinking of Polar Bear liver. Yea you don't want to eat that. But very unlikely on Kodiak. They don't have them.

Agree with YJ on seal liver being pretty darn tasty. You need to have the qualifying ancestry behind you to harvest the seal legally though.
Previous posts from guys on Kodiak showed fox, mink, and otter being available.

Never saw a mink when I lived there. Beaver, fox and otter were plentiful. Supposedly a very few marten, and some ermine.

Winter fishing from shore will be poor. Flounder and greenling. If you have access to a skiff, you can find rockfish and maybe ling cod.

Hot off the press a brand new book on Kodiak written by Darrel Farmen who many of you probably know. Order one from the (green colored) Alaska Trappers Association banner at the top of the page.

Fishing is fantastic on Kodiak all year long. As others have said, the fox and otter population is quite healthy too. If I could convince my wife to move to Kodiak, I think I'd be there yesterday.

First and foremost I want to do a great job for the lodge so won't be traveling to far. I will be happy to just be there and take care of my obligations. Due to the costs of nonres licenses I think at most I would do some close by fishing. Thanks for your responses everything helps.

If you can at all do it, buy the nonresident hunt/trap combo license, but wait until January 1st to do it since non-resident licenses are on a calendar year basis.
You most likely won't have to travel very far (like on foot) from the lodge to satisfy your trapping urge.
Have you talked to the lodge owner about trapping; There is a good possibility they may be very supportive of trapping some of the critters around the lodge; particularly otters. On the other hand they may have some "pet" foxes around that they prefer not be trapped. Tourists love watching foxes but they can be a real PITA at times too.

Watch for Bears on Kodiak. Not all bears hibernate on the island

A week of non-stop rain here usually wakes a bear or 2 up. There wasn't a good Kvichak run this year so I'd imagine some went to bed hungry too.

I've been here at amook pass for 11 days now and have been having a great time. I've never been anywhere that has as much wildlife seabirds, sea otter, seals, deer, fox and on and on. Kodiak is a special place for sure. I'm not doing any hunting fishing or trapping. I believe the neighbor does some trapping so it's all his. Thanks for all the responses you guys gave. Would like to post some pictures but the internet is very limited here. Been doing alot of reading,The last of the great brown bear men,Tales of Alaska bush rat governor and The hunts by Harry Dodge all great reads

Alaska Viking I've spent quite a bit of time in Alaska dating back to the 1990s . I have work lined up for the summer and after a trip home I will be back to work may threw October. I would stay full time but I have a wife back in Michigan untill I can convince her to move I'll continue to bounce back and forth.
