I have a spot loaded with coyote tracks. I set some cable restraints on the ice with my Freedom Brand supports but they swing and spin when pounded in the ice. I used some snow to help the problem, but I'm wondering what would be the best support for on ice?

Once the hole freezes back over it won't spin.

If you don't want to wait that long, get some h type snare supports and drill holes for the legs use a drill to make holes. I guess you double part of the wire and leave a tag and drill a hold for the tag end to go into.

You might be better off setting where the coyotes leave or enter the Ice.

I agree with beav unless you got a choke point on the ice then set those .

Or fill the hole around the support with hot water and ice chips since it freezes quickly. Fill a new thermos with the hot water to transport it to the set location.

Thanks. They run this creek for about 3/4 of a mile and I can only walk part of it due to unsafe ice.

Get some 3/8ths x 4" lag screws and use your cordless drill to screw them Into the ice. Leave about 2" so above the ice so you can wrap your stabilizer wire around the lag.
You can also anchor your snare with that same lag.

Aren't those supports basically just a rod welded to a piece of flat steel? It's hard to picture how they are spinning.

Supports and anchors can be driven into cattail stems right at the ice level. If anchoring, extra care needs to be taken to make sure it will hold.

If you can before the ice gets to thick I go out and chisel holes and drop in 3" - 4" circumference hard wood trees (Iron wood). The when it comes time to hand cables they are froze in. In areas that I set up every year I pound in posts before we get ice.

Oh, I forgot about that rule over there. Ok I have heard of individuals using earth anchors. Chisel a hole deep enough to crack the ice so water comes up. As long as it is cold enough drop the anchor in and let it freeze in leaving a swivel end on the earth anchor sticking out.
