I'm wanting a smear bait/lure I can use with my hog trap that will carry and act as a call lure. What's a good base ? Would lard work in cooler temps ?

I've used corn soaked in various concoctions on the ground but looking for something I can get up in the air.

I don't know the first thing about feral hogs. I have tried using fat for an odor carrier though and it can be disappointing. It actually inhibits the amount of odor molecules that will evaporate into the air. The rest of the story though is in France they train pigs to find truffles. A well trained truffle sniffing pig is a valuable animal so they must have a good sniffer.

I use sun rendered oil from skunk fat to dissolve ethiopian civet paste. I put the oil and paste into a glass jar and put the jar in a pan of water with a little rack to just hold it off the bottom of the pan like you do when water bath canning. When that oil gets hot the paste dissolves right in and that does not inhibit the odor. it allows it to be added to whatever you want. Carmen in his book says to use olive oil.

If you want to rub something on a post or whatever I wonder if honey would work to make it sticky? It would inhibit the smell some too but I would think hogs would like honey odor?

Guess I could try olive oil, honey and cherry or strawberry jello powder.

Use some sandalwood oil Danny for the civet paste, it does a good job.

I'm like Danny that I know nothing about hogs but I would wonder if molasses for a base would work.

Fill a garbage can three quarters with corn, fill to the top with water and add a 32 oz of Bragg raw apple cider vinegar and put the garbage can lid on it. In a few days you will need to add water. The corn should be under the water and stir it, ever few days. In a few weeks it will stink bad, use a strainer and fill a five gallon bucket. You can fill a sock with the fermented corn and hang around the trap. In the center of your trap dig a post hole and fill with what's left. The longer you leave it in the trash can the better they like it. You can keep adding corn to the garbage can.

I've done similar with stale beer, dried molasses, and jello powder but in a 5 gallon bucket. I've also heard of others using out of date buttermilk and bread.
