IMO it's touch and go. Small mink maybe OK, large mink ??????????? I think sticking with a 2 1/2" minimum is the best choice. It does keep most non targets out of the set. You don't want to make to difficult for your target species.

I have been using a box with 2 1/2" hole. I have tried boxes without a hole entrance and had no luck. But with the hole entrance in the front I've been hammering them. I only have 8 boxes and I've caught 13 mink out of them this year. No lure at all! Lure will make them run past that box with no interest. Just a big chunk of beaver and some grass/leaves covering the bait so he has to work for it.

Nice, I am going to build some like that and get them out soon. I have never used one with a front and a hole. Open ones never worked for me.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I'm sold on boxes . But the only time they ever worked was when I trapped In Canada. I caught mink 3' off the ground In marten boxes. I caught lots of mink In marten boxes on the ground. But here In WI It just never worked to where It was worth my time when targeting mink.
A large bait stashed and covered In a drift pile with traps set to the approach will kill every mink in the area.

I once found a deed deer In a drift pile It was like taking candy from a baby. I think In a 2 week time period I killed 12 mink.

IMHO the KEY to good success with mink boxes is the restrictive entrance hole and the use of a pan trigger trap. Mink explore holes all the time and thus the hole is an attraction to them. Although mink are accustomed to tunneling through vegetation, it is my understanding and experience that, many will often balk at the cold, hard and stiff wires in their face at the box entrance and shy away from entering. Whereas with a pan trigger trap set CLOSE to a concealed bait at back of the box, and nothing in their face, they will proceed to enter and investigate further thus stepping on the pan and getting caught.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I'm with bctomcat on the trigger wire thing. If I was to use BGs It would either be pans or a trip wire between the trigger wires.

Funny you mention the deer.. One of the bridges I had a box at had a road kill deer that fell onto the river and they've been going nuts for it. Caught three mink near that deer in three checks.

Open boxes never worked for me strike. Bctomcat is definitely onto something with the restrictive entrance. I have caught mink in 220 buckets and colony traps but an open box set specifically for mink never produced.

I've used some weasel glands but havent found anything that works better than a chunk of beaver. Might just be my mink but I've used "mink lure" with not much success, seems to spook them.

I picked up some newspaper bins this past year. I was thinking they'd work for a mink box. After reading this thead, maybe they won't work so well given that they are completely open on the front.
