Would this coon be worth "fixing" by sewing up damage?

Big boar caught in a conibear and something decided to chew on his chest - no damage to the back or sides.

I would put it up and sew it. My personal rule is if its in my trap I either put it up or release it (if not injured severely or damaged). On the kill traps i put them all up. This particular one i would enjoy the challenge of the repair. There will be a day when I have a valuable hide with damage and practice repairing it will reward me in the longrun.

Yeah - that's my thought as well. If it were completely mauled, I might just toss it, but I've never done that yet no matter what price they might bring.
He's a mess, but there's no releasing him now. It's a shame - he's a hoss!! Got him skinned so... on to the fleshing beam...

Thanks for the feedback.

Here's a before and after picture of a coyote with a bad rip on back of neck that I sewed up and sold without even a slight damage grading. If you do a good job sewing it usually pays off in a higher value.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

You can't sew that up to where It will look half way decent.

That damage is not in a critical area of the pelt. The pelt is totally useable because of where that damage is.
A fur buyer will downgrde it and dock you money even if repaired. But these are the skins that the manufacturers make money on.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Save it and try home tanning it. That's what I'm doing with my damaged coon from this season.
