I am having trouble with coyotes digging out the side of my dirt holes and even pipe dream sets. They dig out the dirt holes at about 3 to 4 o’clock. Any ideas on how to stop this. Had 7 traps dig out on the sides today. Dirt will be thrown on top of trap and pipe is pulled straight out of the ground with the traps still bedded and not messed up. I use backing on all sets too and they will dig through my backing.

Is it possible that you contaminated the backing with lure or urine?

Have you taken the direction of the wind into account? Generally, if I have issues with them digging from the backside it's due to an unforeseen change in the wind.

Not an expert, but some guiding would seem to stop them from approaching from an area that wasn’t beneficial to you.
As far as your pipes being pulled up, you’re not using long enough pipes or angling them towards your trap. I don’t think I’ve ever had a pipe pulled, had one about chewed to the deck, but that was a caught coyote.

Do you have fox? Any paw prints? How far from hole is trap pan? You mentioned he dug out and put dirt on top of trap. Is it excavated? If it's not a big coon, I say you've been made. Get EVERYTHING cleaned up, tools, traps, etc.

Consistently dug out on the same side??? I'd say it IS a wind issue, set your traps on the down wind side of your attractor.

I can see where the wind can effect the direction the animal approaches the set. But once It gets within a few inches of your attractant I'm not buying It.

The man said his traps weren't dug up but the set was. Maybe the angle of the dirt hole Is guiding the animal to dig from that angle while the trap may be setting a bit off to one side. If the trap was dirty they would be digging up the trap.

I would first, back off the number of dirtholes and use more flat sets with lure,no bait.I would also put a dropping or small dab of a different lure, like gland,on the other side of the trap, opposite the main attractor.I would also consider a well blended second trap, where he stood to dig.It sounds like that may be fairly obvious.

The wind direction theory is interesting, especially if all 7 traps are oriented tbe same. You could rotate your sets or move your attractant,if you think that is the case.Good luck.

This year the wind seems to be doing things it normally does not do here seen some of same things this year.
So to combat that I decided a few years back that i would put 2 sets opposing each other. One for a west wind one for the east wind and cured the problem pretty much Around here.

I put in over 200 test holes in the last 16 months. wind has nothing to do with it when they get close enough to stick their nose in the hole.

There are many reason why a coyote works a set from the side and back
I think some coyotes got a single track mind on some of them,, how they got to the set is how they work the set and then move on. Nothing more complex than that.
And I do imo competition makes a coyote work a set differently also.

Everytime I have a set dug out from the side or back, it is in direct relation to the wind being a polar opposite of the predominant wind I set for. For example, a set that was made for a north wind would be dug out by a coyote facing south into a south wind.

I'm not saying they only approach or commit from downwind, but the ones that don't commit to the trap bed definitely seem to stay downwind of the hole.

I think you have a valid point when you say " the ones that don't commit to the trap bed". But I think the "wont commit to the trap bed" is the problem. Keep in mind the air currents swirl , eddie and change direction around tall grass, brush, trees, ditches and draws, especially down at the coyotes level. So it can be challenging to know what the air currents are doing right at the set unless your in a pretty open area.

could be the wind? Move your pipe so your trap is on the left and get that one. Or put two pipes or two holes with your trap blended int he middle. OR pay close attention to it next time and see if that is where the wind is blowing across your set.

Just passin through

No one told the coyote he had to put his nose down the hole to dig at it. If he's approaching from the down wind side which happens to be at the back of the hole not inside your trap pattern he'll dig right down through your little dirt hole to get that bait...if it's worth anything whenever he gets to it. Also coyotes in my humble opinion never got the memo they had to work a dirthole one way because of the angle the hole is dug. We can try to guide them but some coyotes don't stick to our plans.

Yes sir I've seen plenty of action in the snow this winter and our wind has fluctuated quite a bit. I've seen them get downwind hit the spin button right back to the site and dig it right down from the backside. Most of my sets are for a north-west wind which is our predominant wind. This year it's been south more days than not...which caused some early headaches.

This was a set made for a north wind. Night before was a straight south wind. This coyote didn't get the memo it should work the step down, or stick it's head down the hole to dig, or that those large clots on the back side of the dirthole meant he couldn't step there. He dug right in the back....was satisfied. Walked off.
