1st off I'm new to coyote trapping, been doing it for3 years now and have not connected on one yet. When deer hunting I always see them running across the high spots on my property so naturally I've been setting the area's I've seen them and having no luck. My propertyis 110 acres of semi wooded pasture with a small brook that trickles through the valley where woods is and opens up into pastures that gradually go up the valley to high open hill tops. Would I be better off setting on the low ground in like little openings where the pasture begins to come out of the woods making little pinch points? I no doing that will increase my non target catches, but a full traps better than empty ones.

If your setting where your seeing coyotes I'm guessing location isnt the problem. Plus I would think since it sounds like good habitat that the coyotes probably get around to hunting most of it regularly.

Maybe there is enough food source that they ain't interested in any of the smells I'm leaving out there for them. That's the only thing I can figure.

Could be several reasons but enough food probably isnt one of them. One way to test that theory is take some deer meat, rabbit , mice or rat dig a deep dirt hole with no trap and see if they dig it up.

Trapping is like deer hunting for me in IN. I am in Brown Co and I have more hilly terrain than most, but I do trap a lot of transition areas from woods to pasture or fields, creek bends or crossings. Once you learn to read funnel points, travel patterns etc like you do deer hunting apply that to how coyotes hunt for the food. I struggled at first and placed traps where I seen them but most of the time that was during the day deer hunting or to close to the edge. Once I learned to read sign and think like I was trying to place a perfect tree stand to intercept them where they travel like I would a deer, my success went up. Edge of pasture or cover changes, fence lines, entrance into hollows etc. Scout a bit more and look for tracks after all this rain in a couple of days and set on fresh sign.
