Would love to here ideas about anchoring snares at barbed wire fence crawl unders. visibility of catch is not an issue, this is big open ranchland and all private. with 14k acres in one spot and another 12k 30 miles away i need ease and speed.

My suggestion is to tie the snares off to the fence post since I don't know what the condition of the barbed wire is .
With either doubled up 14 or 12 ga wire

I tie off to the bottom strand of the barbed wire with doubled up wire. I use short snares, just long enough to make the loop and tie swivel to fence. If you tie off to the fence, I’d use a longer snare so the coyote can get a run and cinch down the snare for a quick kill. But if there is no kill right away, the coyote can sometimes power out by snapping the cable. Just the way I do it.

thanks all, i'm not much of a snare man, i have used some here and there but mostly a foothold guy all my life, this situation just calls for snares as i could not keep enough footholds active in the weather or time i have. i had someone tell me to never attach to the fence as the coyote would tear itself up and ruin the pelt. running 6 foot of 5/64 7x7 cable with deathblow camlocks for my snares. the coyotes are thick enough that we dragged 2 1,200 lb dead cows to a spot and the next morning when i peeked over the hill was surprised to find only a few scattered bones left, mainly just two picked clean spines. was amazed that two dead cows could disappear so completely overnight. any and all suggestions welcome thanks.

Good choice of snare locks I'd make them a minimum of 8' long but that's just me, food for thought I'd suggest at least 2" of space between the bottom of the loop to the ground so the target animals feet aren't so likely to end up in the snare loop .

Centex Trapper if coyotes are as you say powering out and snapping the snare cable you need some of the snares I make then snapped cable will be a thing of the past .

I like to just use a quick link and attach to the fence too with the longer cam lock snares. Works pretty slick with a snare support.

For a killing snare, I anchor to something solid. If you just anchor to the fence, not as good a chance for a quick kill. The fence is just too springy to get the lock to set tight. JMO.

Scheide is right, the fence acts as a shock spring.I have anchored to fences gor many years but I have just about decided to stake snares at some of my crawl under places. The coyotes stay alive too long regardless of lock type. Some have almost chewed out and at best, waterheads are common.I am not even sure if it is legal to attach directly to a fence here as we are required to anchor to a solid object so that a breakaway can function.

If I could do It I'd just drive In kill pole stake away from the fence and let them wind up around the kill pole. It would save the fence and get you a quicker dispatch.

Oh ya. I forgot to include the kill pole. When I use my quick links on the fence itself I always use a kill pole to dispatch them quickly. It works pretty good

I know a lot of people who snare under barb wire. I did when I first started to. But after seeing the coyote wrapped around a bunch of twisted wires and a chunk of fur hanging from every barb within 3 foot of the coyote I quit setting right under or near the wires. Now if I find a good location under wire I anchor my snare as far away from the wire as I can, but keeping the loop fairly close to the crossing. Then put a kill pole opposite side of the snare stake away from the fence . If I feel I need to crowd the critter in the snare under the crossing I take a small stake and make a hole or two to put some tall grass in or maybe an evergreen small branch or something else.... natural looking. I use 2 foot long 3/8" or 1/2" rebar stakes... size depends on situation.

Beav has it right. start the kill pole set as far away from the crawl under as possible and the crawl under will stay active. After the catch move a little closer to the crawl under. I have had crawl unders that had 8 burn circles within 20 yards of it. To boot barb wire tears up a yote hide. Just like not snaring cats in a briar patch, lol.

I use the bottom of the fence post for the snare anchor, I use long snare extensions so they can reach the next post down.
There usually wrapped up on it and dead.
