A coon dug up my foot hold trap. Perfectly dug up, around the entire circumference. Never sprung the trap. It was a dirt hole set.
What am I doing wrong ?

Just a weekend trapper...

Nothing. Coons love to dig in fresh dirt. Set a dog proof nearby and catch him or he might come back and do it every night.

More than likely what you are doing wrong is not getting the trap bedded solid. If once set in the trap bed you put pressure on any portion of the trap and the trap itself moves at all it is not bedded solid. Coon for example steps on law and trap move a bit. they think cool let me dig that up and see what it is.

I don’t know why I think that would be so cool to see. I have yet to have a trap dug up. Of course we don’t have a high predator population at the plantation. Start a place Wednesday where it could be a good opportunity for it to happen though!! I’ve even read about them dug up and flipped over and still be set, ready to fire.

I had that happen a couple times this year with a MB650. I think it was porcupines.

I bought a trappers cap for my MB 550 after a coon dug several sets up last summer. Creek bottom with extremely sandy soils and hard to pack. Later used it to nab 4 grey fox in a similar situation.

I like using it in certain situations

This trap was 1/2 out of the bed. The coon knew something was under there, and wanted to play with it. Never sprung.
I caught 11 coons in this location this season. DP, conibears, live traps. and I know more coons are out there.

I did the dirt hole set for a Fox. But too many coons running around.

That can be frustrating when ya aren't targeting coon.

I once had a coon dig up a trap with 6' of chain, carry it about 25 yds and laid it down, upside down, still set and chain and drag out stretched.I was green and when he first messed with the set,I thought I was dealing with a fox. After all, that is what I set for. crazyOnce I saw this,I knew it was a coon, made a couple changes and he was waiting for me,next day.

I also had a couple cat sets uncovered once, was sure it was a coon.I back tracked to a patch of snow and found out it was two otters.True story, and I did not catch them.I might not be an otter trapper!
