a victor 4 s imo the lock up is second to none ,, and round jaw comes out the ground pretty darn good in this frosty ground country up here... mechanical advantage or not ,,, the chance of catching a rock in it is greatly reduced imo.
I do not always agree with Robert but this one I throw in with him on. Lol

I look at It this way if a man can go out and catch 560 some coyotes and he tells me that an offset will give him a mechanical advantage I will take his word for It. LOL

Mechanical advantage probably has to do with the round jaws of the trap. Less surface area the trap needs to come up through the ground in bad weather conditions. Robert was my instructor at Trappers College and couldn't have asked for a better one. Keep an open mind and listen.

Keets he's using parts of the rats at each set not the whole thing.

Update.

14 coyotes today 5 with mange.
Ground Is rock hard and about 4 Inches of frost. Uses a masonry bit to get a pilot hole started for his anchors.

Having problems getting his dirt hole auger to work In this ground. Thinking of welding a masonry bit to the end of the auger to get It started.

Laminated traps are a no no when trapping In this type of soil. To much added material to come up through the trap covering. Laminated traps are used In fair weather situations.

Gets his coyote urine from Bob W and One legged Johnny. Has enough stored for at least 4 years of trapping. He said If your not using coyote urine at coyotes sets you don't want to catch many coyotes.

Heading to new ground next Monday.

I would assume that wide faced cast jaws would also move more covering as thye go off. But If your using waxed dirt or peat then I'm not sure It's a problem. But In Roberts case he's top dressing the peat to make the set more natural and to keep It from blowing away. So when that top dressing freezes up those jaws still have to bust through It.

One Legged Johnny is a trapper in Indiana that also collects urine. You can see him at most National Conventions. Heck of a nice guy.

This has absolutely nothing to do with mechanical advantage. It has everything to do with the energy the trap has when tripped. Mechanical advantage is what a person gets when he uses a set of tongs on a conibear for example.

The higher the levers of a trap get from the pivot point of the jaws the greater the mechanical advantage the levers have. The (only) advantage of an offset in my opinion.

What is mechanical advantage then? Levers having to travel further to close makes a trap slightly slower anyway. It's not MA.

Think if you had to hold the jaws tight on a stick with your fingers. The farther from the jaws pivot point you can push the more pressure you put on the stick

Just make those levers real long then. That will give you the MA I'm talking about. Won't help trap though.
