I was wondering when is the right time to use call lures. I have several on hand. Right now temps here are 30s to 40s. Or should it get colder? And how far do they carry?

And does a good call lure go well with the pipe set? In the pipe?

You can always use a call lure. Just use less when it's warmer.

Some are louder than others. Gusto or Nitro are very strong, for example.

Keep your call lure AWAY from the SET. Call lures are meant to bring the critter Into the location. Then your milder lures like food lures and gland lures can take over.

I get the olfactory fatigue thing once in a while and forget how bad the cab of my truck smells. Hard to convince some people there isn't a body in the back seat well underway in the decomposing stages.

For bobcat trapping I put gusto in the dirt hole sometimes. Not no issue with it. I have even done that coyote sets. I use gusto hellfire lightning in a bottle just to name a few.

I believe those strong skunk call lures create rolling and shoulder rubbing at the set. And I for one don't want that type of reaction.

A strong call lure placed up high about 10 or so feet from the set will get them checking things out. I have also had some luck placing he urine about 2 feet or so from my actual set. Just pick out something that stands out or just plant something as a urine holder.

I only use them up high because down low too many coyotes will tend to roll on them.

My experience is that lures with a hint of skunk are powerful enough for a canine call with the canines superior smelling abilities. Those recommending to place far away from set are correct. In fact a hint of skunk will let Mr. Coyote or Fox think he is stealing a meal that a skunk left behind. A powerful dose of good skunk quill is going to put the canine on super suspicion with what danger caused the skunk to let loose. Opinions will be all over on this topic.

Slim Pederson had an interesting article about coyote reactions to lures he'd seen on cameras in the last Trappers World magazine. Didn't sound like a positive reaction when the lures were put on an elevated spot like the top of a fence post.

Have you found that glo in the dark lightning in a bottle lure to be successful? I have some, maybe should try it @ a cat set

Call lure read It again. Call lure brings the critter Into the vicinity that's why It's called a CALL lure.
If your on location you don't need a powerful odor at the set. But how many times are you on the exact location?

A elevated lure will be carried by the wind any animal down wind of that lure Is going to smell It. A lure placed on the ground has a much less chance of being picked up by the wind.
A lure placed on top of a post or a lure holder hung on a tree branch Is doing It's job by getting the animal Into the vicinity and In doing so has done It's job. And In my opinion has caused a reaction from any animal that smells It.

Now It's the lure at the set to do It's job.

There are times where I have dumped a deer carcass out In some brushy field. Some times those carcasses never get hit. Maybe It's because they freeze up and there Is very little scent given off. Or maybe the coyote just doesn't travel through that area. So I decided I would try hanging a lure holder near that deer and I dosed It with a loud call lure. It didn't always work but It worked sometimes. And when It did work those coyotes left tracks In the snow to show me where to hang my CRs.

But what every works for you Is what you should do.

Long distance call And not all call lures have skunk in them and you can use call lures if put at the trap set if you take advantage of critter response a head time.
(Example )a rub set or what is called a rub set for cats.
But like BEAV said location is the key.

I have used cavens predator plus bait with skunk. No issue with rolling. I have caught many skunks in traps to have been eaten. Only thing was left was foot in trap and fur. I have seen both bobcat and coyote tracks around.

I don't think there's a good answer as to how many yards a call lure will reach

It all depends on the wind. With the right conditions I can smell my set up from 200 yards away I'm betting a coyote could smell It from 500 yards away with the right conditions.

I would imagine canines have a better sense of smell than bobcats, but I don't know that. You don't see Police CATS smile

I think location is key. We probably sometimes underestimate how good predators smell. After a few days I often can hardly smell the attractants at my set, if it all, while standing close to it. Unless maybe it's Gusto. I think my sense of smell is good. And I don't think I put out too little lure. Anythings possible I guess. I suppose it depends how often people re-lure.
