From everything I have read on flake wax (mostly info from candle making suppliers) I am pretty sure all flaked wax is made from soy wax, not paraffin. No one offers paraffin flake wax, only soy. I also see where you can buy 50 lbs. of pure flake (soy) wax with no additives for about $60. Flake wax from trapping supply outlets are double that. So, unless I am wrong, we have all been making waxed dirt from soy wax. Several years ago I had extra bags of flake wax so I used it to wax traps and caught plenty of canines that year.

I should add that they do make a paraffin wax in bead form, just not flaked.

I believe it is paraffin.

I made several phone calls to candle wax suppliers around the country today. They all said the same thing, flaked wax is either soy wax or palm wax, not paraffin. Paraffin is either blocks or beads but the beads are very expensive.

Side question? Is there an issue one way or the other? Personally right now I am using trap wax that has been grated but many others are using flake wax in their dry dirt.

There are both types of flaked wax paraffin and soy. There is also granulated. I bought 55 lbs of granulated food grade paraffin. In the product description it gave the melt point, oil content and odor levels along with several other specs like color. It worked out to about $1.70 / lb to my door. I’ve tried to find it again was unable to do so. I don’t know for sure but I think soy wax would have more odor. I posted a product # at the time but only got wize crack responses so just it go. Good luck with your search.

I tried some wax from a candle maker that was beads. It had a little odor but I made a trash can full of dirt form it anyway. It still had a little odor the first week of December. I tried it anyway. I caught one coyote in ten days with 24 sets. I picked them all up and reset using ''old reliable'' wax from O'Gorman's and caught 23 so far. I think they could smell it and wanted nothing to do with the first wax.

Do what you want, but coyotes know best and they will let you know when somthing is wrong.

Just because some candle makers don't offer flaked pariffin, doesn't mean trapping suppliers could not contract to get it done.I can't picture them selling soy wax.At any rate,I bet a call to a reputable supplier would let you know what kind of wax they are selling.

I just buy 10 pound blocks of pure paraffin from hobby lobby with a 40%off online coupon and I take those home and shave em up into flakes with a block plane. Works really well. I use the same wax to wax my traps.

I buy new wax for traps and use the old trap wax for the dirt. Shaved with plane like above mentioned.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Just for FYI, here's a thread on this topic a while back that has some good info.

From reading that thread it does appear that flaked wax is soy and beaded wax is paraffin.

It does.I don't think I would use soy wax.I used to work at a place that gotcgranulated paraffin in 50 lb bags. That was good stuff. Most of the granulated paraffin I have seen, online was sold in small quantities.I wonder if this isn't part of the reason for the high cost?has anyone seen granulated paraffin sold in large quantities?

I’ve seen a couple places that sold granulated in bulk, but I didn’t bookmark any and now forget where. I’m not sure why anyone says not to use soy flaked wax? Haven’t people been using flaked wax for decades?
I’ve never used it, does it have an odor?
