Anyone have any luck with speed dip for coyotes? I am old school as far as dyeing and waxing, would love to make it easy, will a coyote reject a trap that has been done with this?

I use it. But i dip early(coleman fuel or high octane gas) and leave them hanging under the overhang roof to air out all summer

Dakota Line's dip is supposedly odorless

Nothing Is odorless. Maybe we can't smell It but I bet a critter can. But once you bury the trap or put It under water who cares.

I've been thinking about speed dipping my conibears for water trapping. I can't think of a downside. I know some, like you Beav, don't like dipping, but it should work fine for water sets I would think? Your powder coating idea is better for trap treatment, but most don't have good access to powder coaters.

There is definitely a down side to speed dipping bodygrips.

Yes, someone will chime in now and say all you have to do is clean and prep the dog and triggers. I had some that snapped off too easily no matter how much I adjusted, filed and cleaned the engagement areas. But I use a method that doesn't require all the extra work...actually none at all. There are definitely better products and methods to coat bodygrip traps. That is just my opinion.

I caught some coyotes in speed dipped traps just to see if I could do it. A friend dipped them for me just as Blak Spot described. Using speed dip in any other manner is asking for problems in my experience.

Cedar, are you saying dip on a BG creates a slippery situation on the dog? I just want to ensure I understand what problem you are referring to.
I'd be curious how you preserve your conibears.

I really like Newt’s Formula 1. Did a bunch of snares and a few traps tonight. Best part is they’ll be ready to set tomorrow since it’s a water based dip

I have all my body grips speed dipped. I just take a pocket knife and in a few scratches I take off the dip where the dog fits over the jaw. Easy to do. I like my traps black, not rusty.

This would be my thought. I'm curious what Cedar's take is.
I want to do something w/ my rusty BG's.

I believe all the chemistry comp of the petroleum dips are a form of Coal Tar (from my engineer father in law). They do lend a small amount of lubrication as the metal slides or rotates against another metal part. If a problem occurs at the trigger-dog you can use the NebrCatMan's method of cleaning or a rat tail file to clean and deepen the notch. The odor of the petroleum is another post but I dye (in a tannin based dye --- logwood, sumac, walnut hulls, bark, leaves etc., etc.,), rinse in soda water and dip in petroleum for my users. Lasts for several years of normal use and 2-4 years of hard use. I paint or waterdip the ones I resell so the new owner can do as he/she wishes. Either way they are preserved for seasons or when I decide to use/sell a bunch. Don't like wax on BG's , never have since I waxed the first ones in the 70's ! ! ! ...... my take......... the mike

I quit doing any treatment to body grips years ago. hasn't hurt my traps or my catch

Sir, do you use the dip on canine traps?
Thanks

If the dip worked, did you prefer a more traditional method?

i have tried everything at one time or another. I know some really good canine traps that love using dip.
It seems the vast majority do not like it. Kind of weird there is such a vast difference of opinion.

I dislike any water based dip, period. Would love to find the secret formula to correctly using fuel based dip. I thought when I got older and retired I would have so much time on my hands I would love sitting and watching traps boil etc.
Has not happened. I am busier than I ever was, and I suspect I cannot get as much done as I once was.

Like I said, people will say to just clean the dog engagement areas. Its just one more thing to do and my time is better spent doing other things. There are just better ways to do it. I don't hear of anybody switching TO speed dip. What Wife said definitely makes sense. I don't need my BG's to be touchy and fast, I need them to hold some trigger tension.

If people like it, that's great. Do whatever gives you confidence. I like Formula One

Mac, my friend handed me a couple speed dipped traps one year and told me to make some dirtholes with them.....just so I would quit yapping about Speed Dip.

Those traps caught coyotes and I quit smack talking.....for the most part.

I have handled speed dipped traps that were done incorrectly, and they were nasty.
