[align:left][/align][b][/b]I could use some tips for trapping bobcats in 2 1/2 feet of powdery snow can only get around by snowmobile, plan on trying some trash pile rub posts sent posts and flagging right along the trail edge and wrapping the trap in wax paper and covering with some snow only problem is it is supposed to get a little warm on Saturday and Sunday I do have wax dirt and peat moss but I was worried about the difference in looks and texture.

Bobcats don't care about the looks,in fact the contrast against the snow can be a very attractive visual.This would also be a good situation for an exposed traps.Different States where I have trapped,bobcats have holed up for 2 weeks when the snow was fluffy.After that,as soon as the snow crusted over or compacted ,look out!There will be a big flurry of movement.Be ready for that.If I were using peat moss I would make a big pattern of it,beyond just the trap bed,for that visual affect.This all depends of course,that there are cats present.Good luck.

I've used wax paper but have never tried wrapping a trap in it. Does that work pretty good?

If I were you I'd look for the dvd on Herb Lenon predator trapping,there's a segment on trapping deep snow.I don't know where you're at up here,but I'm well familar with the conditions you're operating under,and have trapped off a snow machine,and have never hauled around wax dirt on the snow machine.

Exposed trap walk thru rub set or whatever set you would like,, under a confier or between two conifers is better if spacing is tight enough ,,will block a lot of snow I get years where the snow is pretty deep hear also.
Knee deep is not uncommon here in my part of the state up higher powder snow is way better to my liking and the traps than freeze thaw snow that wet crap stinks lol.

I shovel or stomp paths and make walk through's. Sometimes I feel like a nut out in the middle of nowhere shoveling snow.


I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

I do the same thing. I give them an approach and an exit from the set. We had two feet of snow at one point this winter and I used straw to keep my traps suspended near the surface and out of danger from freezing in. A little bit on top of the traps to keep the snow out of the moving parts. Our season ended the last day of December and every trap I had set fired flawlessly when I shut things down.

Good to know about the straw. I keep a bail in my truck. Was just using it today on a couple sets in fact. Straw can also be used to cover the bait in a dirt hole when the snow's too deep to find grsss.

So everyone is supposed to know every trap restriction everywhere-as if.I stand by my statement-the best tool for taking cats in deep snow is snares.
If you got a problem with trapping restrictions get organized and get the rules changed.

I never suggested he use anything,I made the statement that snares are the best tool to take cats in deep snow.And they are.
It is up to him to figure out what is legal in his jurisdiction,definitely not me.
