Sharon and Mike -
Glad you two can glean something from my drivel. I've thought long and hard about the marten/fisher conundrum.

Ken -
Yeah, get Brett fully informed about those marten that are tied to conifers. Speaking of which, I'm glad I didn't tie on on last night. The troopers would be looking for me. Too, no comments about my thought process re: marten and fisher.

Jack

White you are just lurking for chances like that! LOL. I love it.
Thanks for the info Gulo.
My late father in law lived most of his life in Fisher Marten border area. Saying that I am distracted now and must tell you that I once met a guy named Martin Fisher..... He was a trapper too!

Anyway, my late father in law used to say that the territories almost never overlapped. When they did, the fishers would take over as a rule. But then again there was not alot of scientific discussion that went on beyond that.

Be excellent to eachother

Lots of great info here. Thank you all!
Nice Fisher MadMike.

I’ve got a few traps in northern SE and this season have caught exactly 1/4 of marten as typical, to date.

Haven’t caught/seen any fisher either tho. Although this theory is very intriguing.

Have you guys been getting the fisher as by catch in marten sets? Or are you targeting them?

Fishnak- I have only taken two fisher. One at the tail end of last season and this one was right at the kickoff this season. Both were caught in the same marten set as by catch.

Ok. 2 more taken today, that I know of. One by yours truly.
All the fisher taken in this area, (to the best of my knowledge), have been taken in marten and wolverine sets.

Just doing what I want now.

It doesn't matter what the set is. If they come near a baited set they will investigated. I have caught them in coyote and lynx snares as well as expected in marten and mink sets.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Gulo, I have to let you know how much I enjoyed that mini dissertation you posted. I learned a few things there I was unaware of. Keep that up, it's refreshing!

Gulo thanks for you writing up some synonyms of the two.

What I've found with ecto-parasites with the two species. Is that in years with a snowshoe hare crash the fisher have way more species of a flea species only found on wood chucks and the odd skunk.
( but skunks co-exhist in chuck's dens in winter ) Think about it..dig into a rock pile and take out a 6 pound sleeping topour chuck steak.

With the new system with Smash -and- bash DNa sequencing to see what the animals are eating in the hair samples will open another chapter in this book.
Be interesting if they went back to some old Fisher stoles from 100 years ago and tested that hair to see-who-is -who- in -the -zoo.
