Just curious of how many of you in your area have coyote hunters that use hounds? Approx how many they kill a year? and your relationship with them?

We have a fair amount, one group kills a lot and the others seem to kill 10 or more. Don't really have a relationship but one thing most people don't agree with is dogs cant follow property lines so will run though anyones land with or without permission.

I have 3 different groups of them around me. Don't think they kill a huge number. They mainly hunt on Sunday's. Believe it or not, I have been refused permission to trap many times because the landowner has given permission to the dog hunters.

Same here. We have a few groups of them. They seem to disregard property lines quite a bit. The shooters won't trespass, but they'll run their dogs through entire sections. Can always tell when they are in a section, there'll be 10 or so trucks and a bunch of guys with AR's standing around.

I have not had any direct contact with them. I always leave a section I am rabbit hunting in if they show up. Not sure what their dogs are like and don't want to find out.

Same here. Most of the time the hunters attitude is that they've been doing it for so long they don't need to ask. I've had sets destroyed by catching one of their dogs and the hunters don't hesitate to show their disapproval of me trapping their coyotes. I have no problem sharing property and make every effort to make myself available should they wish to hunt an area that I am trapping/snaring on but it appears to be too much effort to call ahead. Luckily I have yet to catch a dog in a snare but just know when I do, it'll be my fault and the trouble will begin. All part of the game I guess....

The facts are we are all in this together whether one person or side likes it or not. I hound hunt and trap the same areas. If a man is legally hunting or trapping itís of no concern to me. Bad apples on both sides will ruin it for everyone. Dogs canít read and I do everything I can to stay off peoples property. My home butts up against large public land and occasionally others dogs come through or tree on my property. If they are respectful we have no problem. My state fortunately has small trap size restrictions and with laminated jaws Iíve yet to see one of mine hurt in my own traps. A little understanding from both sides would go a long way in helping us all keep our right to hunt and trap.

Another note, very few people are hunting or trapping all over the country nowadays. This generation will be the last that gets to do it if we canít unite and help promote one another and quit bickering over whoís way is more important, more ethical, requires more skill, etc....

Have a group near me that runs them hard all winter....pushing a 100 a year. We get along fine, informally let me know what area they plan to run and I tell them roughly where my snares are. We have had no issues. I stopped by one night and showed them how I take out the ear cartridge and one of the guys sent me home with two brand new coyote boards in thanks.

Some of those old boys amaze me when they are listening to the hounds tongue, tell you exactly how far away it is, which way its moving and give you better then even odds on where you should be standing when that coyote pops out. Like one of the old fellas said back in his working days if he crossed tracks on the way to work, he turned around and got his dogs because he made more off the pelt then he did at work!

Never did ask what he did though wink

Ok, thanks for the replies, This has not been and don't want this to be a hound bashing conversation. But, I relate to many of these valid points, and it can be very frustrating. I have a couple boys i'm trying to teach more traditional ways of doing things, and they are loving it, and lets just say a lot of what they do hampers our efforts. I would say of 3-4 groups in a 25 mile radius in a year with good snow can kill over 200 coyotes. I know coyotes kill many fawns, so yes lets knock them back, but a lot of folks got everyone believing they are the devil reincarnated. Like everyone literally hates, and i mean HATE them and has no respect for them. In my opinion if you don't respect an animal you are not a true hunter or conservationist. i guess a problem we have is we have a lot of hunters who are not conservationists, and I'm not labeling houndsmen, just making a general assumption.

X2...

Running hounds is just as much as a tradition as trapping...I do both to extremes. Unfortunately, both are getting harder and harder every year. Everyone owns 5 acres and the almighty trophy deer has everyone's panties in a wad. Turn the hunter against the trapper and it just will die faster. As if the anti's aren't bad enough, we fight amongst ourselves.

They use sight hounds around here to catch them. Its basically hunt them with truck then when you get on top of them send the dogs. Have several friends that run greyhounds and have hunted with probably a dozen different guys. Some are respectful of property rights and some not so much. When you add a truck to part of the hunting gear it can bring out some people that normally wouldn't hunt.

Well said, that is a tradition I don't want any part of. And is just going to cause trouble for the rest of us in the long run. When i set traps i try to be out of sight of roads and general public, do i have to by law, absolutely not, but we are all better off if we do. These road hunters are not out of view of general public and it is just a matter of time. I'm not lumping everyone together here, but we all know the type.

I dont view this as fighting amongst ourselves, but as having a conversation about a controversial subject.

I'm fine with others doing their own thing weather deer, pheasant or coyote hunting as long as they respect me and what I'm doing. I've always told the LO's that if someone else wants to hunt to let me know so we can avoid any potential problems. Last thing I want is to hear of someone's dog getting hurt or worse. No one wins if that happens!

I've been told that a few times too. Landowner will say "Nope, so and so got all the coyotes cleaned out of here last year." UmmmÖ..NO. They maybe got 2 out of the section and I can see tracks everywhere this year.

I put up fur for a few hound guys. I like them and their permissions are in order. I just have no interest in doing it or going with.

We have some hound hunters around here, but it seems the land is fragmented such that it'd be hard to keep hounds off of posted property.

We have a couple of groups in my area that kill upwards of 100 each winter. They have had their problems with trespassing, but most people here are happy they are killing them.

Like anything thereís the good and bad. Have three groups of them right where I am. Iíve enjoyed going with one group since I was a kid. Iíve been with them when they didnít catch any and Iíve been with them when they had 13 by noon. This year they got antsy and were out before the snow. Had all three groups run over the top of me checking traps at some point.

I prefer the hound hunters to the shotgunners. At least the coyotes still stand a chance Iíve seen many times they hit a brush pile or pond spill way tube to beat the dogs. Theyíll leave them for the next round. The shotgunners are worse. Theyíll run them right through cattle, fences, and thereís little chance if the coyote gets out and runs it lives. Theyíre not much against a truck and Iíve seen guys do things you wouldnít imagine chasing coyotes. The most Iíve personally seen the shotgunners kill in one day was 34. Iím sure theyíve had better days.

Eventually everything must die.

We have a small group around my area and i find it hard to set some spots due to them running dogs and me not wanting the hassle of catching their dogs. I will say they must be doing something wrong cause i have gone with them on a few occasions just to see what it was all about and never saw a coyote. So the guys putting up nu.bers are either in heavily populated areas or they are just that good or both.
