Can anyone recommend a good coyote video that deals with a lot of big woods trapping? I do okay in the farm country but feel like I'm struggling in the woods.

Ya it goes that way for me too. Can you use snares. I've caught them in woods with snares before. Someone recently told me to use blind sets cause coyotes don't like to approach sets unless they can see around them if a larger predator would jump at them.

Yeah. We can use snares. I think my problem is more in locations. They dont seem to travel the roads and trails as much as they do down in my agricultural areas. They do cross my woods roads but not always in the same areas. Might be a hundred yards or more either way. To me it seems more like they are hunting more than traveling thru.

When I use to snare I would hang them in deer trials roughly 10 inches from ground roughly 10 inch loop as a starting point (gotta make sure you crimp deer stop). I always brought snares with me during my checks and added Where I saw sign. It is very effective on them.

How do you all avoid deer in your snares? Anytime I set close to a deer trail I catch them.

Darin was a local trapper and an all round good guy. Unfortunately he died in a boating accident several years ago.

Following coyote tracks in the big semi open woods is kind of like watching my 6 year old son try to accomplish a task. They just wander around and if something grabs there attention they go check it out. They duck through the weirdest places.

I set deer trails and put a stick across the trail before the snare about two-three feet high, this blocks the deer but does not affect the coyote. I still use BAD's on my snares just in case a deer gets caught but the stick seems to keep my snare up and working.

Find the semi open areas all woods have, rock outcrop, mini meadow, etc. Throw some bait out if legal, if not put out some scent. I then hang some snares 5-10 feet into the woods around that opening, on paths I think they will take. They like to circle around something new, try to get downwind, etc.

I took the New Jersey Snaring, DP and Cage. School last winter. Newt says a stick over a snare almost guarantees a deer will go under it. In fact, he said they’ll crawl under fences just like coyotes will. And in some awfully low spots as well.

He’s an expert. My regional association director says he’s caught several deer in snares and it’s not fun taking them out if they’re still alive. Here in Minnesota, the DNR regs say not to set on deer trails for this very reason.

A 200 # deer will go under a stick, tree, what ever. That is 18" off the walking surface.
WHY?
It takes less engery to go under, than to jump over.

Around here that would absolutely guarantee you catch every single deer that walks up to every single snare.

BAD's do not work when pulled by the windpipe of a deer either.

Listen to Newt.
Let the deer walk through and knock down the snare or they may walk around It or step over It. In my opinion these jump sticks are of no value.

I set every deer trail I can find because coyotes run the same trails. I get lots of knocked down CRs and have only killed 2 deer In all the years I've been doing It. Neck caught and the BAD didn't give way.

When there are to many deer in the area I usually do not hang snares. Why increase the chance of catching them by hanging on their trails. I will go the extra mile finding where coyotes squeeze through a spot than hoping that deer don't get tangled up in my cables.

Jump sticks I have set seems to turn into a dive stick for deer. And as Newt already said if the BAD will hold a coyote, then it is going to kill the neck caught deer. Teacher saw first hand at the school what we teach in setting cable in the woods. I call it sightline, sight picture. Newt calls it making it disappear.

I would have thought the CR's relaxing lock would keep the deer alive. Apparently that's not always the case. This is 1 reason I prefer the traditional 285# BAD even though 350# is now legal.

Relaxing locks are only relaxing until the first hard tug or the animal hits the end of the cable hard. Then the lockset, or also called cable set, happens where the cable kinks and the lock will not relax or back off. It doesn't continue to add pressure, but it doesn't back off either. The deer stop is the nonlethal part of the CR system. NJ. I believe was the first state to use the CR system here in the northeast back in 1986 and still using the same regs and system now. We do not have a Break Away on our system and can use any lock except cam locks. along with entanglement. We do not have problems except if a deer is caught by the neck it can kill the deer. That will happen with or without a BAD. So Newt and I both teach DONT SET to catch a deer. Most deer caught by the leg will kick the cable off with our 2 inch circumference Deer stop, Breakaways come into play with livestock and larger wildlife like elk, moose, bear that step into the loop.
