Ok, here’s the scenario, trapping a place I trapped last year and caught quite a few on DP’s. Since then, the landowner went and bought a bunch of DP’s and deployed them himself. He wasn’t exactly “punctual” in checking traps and had some that perished in the traps. His traps haven’t been set since deer season started in September. I started on the 1st and only have 2 coons and 2 possums in the DP’s around his feeders. He sent a pic this morning of 2 coons feeding under the feeder and literally sitting right beside my DP.
I’m thinking the only two options I have are to A) Try burying the DP’s or B) Set footholds further away trying to get them before they get to the feeder. Seems I always catch them in my coyote sets anyways. And before anyone says to find their trails, it doesn’t work that way down South. There are 30 deer trails in 1ac down here, lol. Plus I’d spend half a day resetting tripped traps. Any ideas? Tricks? Oh yeah, tried marshmallows, marshmallows and grape jelly, marshmallows and catfood with grape jelly, and now catfood mixed with sardines.

When i have had this issue at deer feeders i moved some of my DP's a little further away from the deer feeder using the same thing that is in the feeder in them. Trying to be on trail with these as well. Like you said though being on trail is a relative term when there are so many trails. I have picked up the coon that were seen eating corn off from the ground before they got to the feeder to eat doing this. Another thing i have done when i have found or thought i found a coon to be dp shy was set a blind set leading up to the dp. They may be dp shy but they still cant resist coming to the trap to check it out is my angle on that. I have connected with both when i was running dry prior.

They are hitting the corn and not the protein. Tried straight corn, and now corn and sardines. Will definitely try moving the traps back away from the feeders and see if that helps. May just make some coyote sets as well since they clog those up everywhere else, lol. Anyone ever put your bait for coyotes/cats in a DP? It was foggy this morning but the coon under the feeder has 2 DP’s within 2-5ft and 2 others within 10ft.

The two coons you caught were they big old coons or less than 2 year old? DP's in our warm weather project a high magnetic field. If the land owner was doing what you said they are the ones that learned to avoid. If they did learn, use a trap with a low field and you will catch them. Normally, only older coon will react to the field because they learned. Burying the DP I don't think will help I don't think if the coon are educated. The DP's I tested here were putting out a high intensity. Probably 4 times or more than a MB 550. If the two coons in the picture are mature is the flag.

If it was me I would back off the feeders a bit and try putting in a couple of dirtholes. Skip the urine as this will attract deer. Try a sweet coon call lure and a smear of shellfish or fish bait down the hole itself.

As far as magnetic fields are involved...these same DP’s work at the other places I’ve trapped without issue. You didn,t trap as the landowner did at the other places did you? The scenario you gave was a similar example in my book.

I've never heard of them being DP shy. Maybe not I terested in the offerings, but not the trap. This time of year here I get less coon on bait, more on gland lures and especially pick them.up in coyote sets with coyote or fox gland lures. I also switch to 160s late in season. If its warm and they are are out, they will go right by a DP with just food but will get caught in the nearby coyote dirthole or a blind set 160..just other stuff on their mind this time of year and especially the bigger boars. Mating season is near. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Bury the DPs so the rim of the DP is below the surface of the ground. Use coyote bait in a couple and sweet bait in a couple. Put a thin strip of plastic bag on a string a couple feet above a couple of the DPs as a flag. It’s like flagging bobcats.
