Ive never trapped rats under the ice before. This fall I watched a lake and saw quiet a few rats swimming around. Now we have about 3 foot of snow on the lake and no obvious pushups nor am I able to see runs through the ice.

If I where to try and catch rats in this lake what would you suggest? Baited body grips along the outside of the cattails and shore line? I would never have known about them unless I saw them in the fall, there is no sign of them now and the lake is locked up tight with ice.

Thanks, MP

Yes 6 inches or so under the ice and if you can find actual houses, out in front of them 4-5 ft.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I'd bait with a carrot or muskrat hockey puck.

They look like a hockey puck but they are green. They are shoved on to the BGs trigger wires. They are used as eye appeal under water.

I tried them and had all kinds of sprung traps. Way to big and heavy I figured as the rat was approaching the devise It was pushing water ahead as It swam and would set off the trap. A piece of grapefruit rind or a orange peel will work better.

If you can't find the huts or den holes or push ups I think trapping rats under the ice Is a waste of time.

The guy that owns the rights to them is out of Pewaukee, Wi. Surprisingly he doesn't sell them through retailers. You must buy from him. Last I knew I think they're $1.50 each and there's 4 colors available: orange, yellow, green, & white. They're made for 160's, but could be cut down to a 110 size I suppose. I have some, though a simple carrot probably works fine. They won't fall off your trigger, that'd be 1 advantage I suppose. I have mixed thoughts on them. They must be made from some sort of proprietery material b/c it's such hard to describe the unique feel & texture & consistency they have. Here's where to buy them:

I can tell you the guy is very reputable & has been a big supporter of our state association, in particular with all the water trapping demos he's given over the years, for example.
